The Texas Rangers remain firmly in the American League postseason picture, sitting just 1.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West race with a 45-45 record while also holding the league’s third and final Wild Card spot.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Rangers’ direction over the remainder of July will play a major role in determining whether they become buyers or sellers.

If Texas remains in contention, strengthening the offense could become one of the organization’s primary objectives.

Jim Bowden from The Athletic recently proposed a trade scenario that would send outfielder Luis Robert Jr. from the New York Mets to Texas.

While Robert’s talent makes him an intriguing target, the proposed return appears far too expensive considering both his recent production and current injury situation.

Bowden suggested the Rangers send left-handed pitching prospect Dalton Pence and outfield prospect Paxton Kling to the Mets in exchange for Robert.

“Best fit: Luis Robert Jr., CF, New York Mets,” Bowden wrote. “The Rangers might be willing to offer a package of left-hander Dalton Pence and outfielder Paxton Kling to make the trade work from the Mets’ side of things.”

Although Robert possesses significant upside, surrendering two promising prospects for an injured player whose performance has declined over multiple seasons would represent a considerable gamble.

Pence, a 23-year old pitcher, was selected in the 2024 draft and has enjoyed an impressive year between High-A and Double-A, recording a 2.60 ERA in 65.2 innings across 13 starts.

Kling, an outfielder who is also 23 years old, was selected in the 2025 draft, has posted an .804 OPS in 53 High-A games and 188 at-bats this season.

According to MLB Pipeline, Pence ranks as the Rangers’ No. 12 prospect, while Kling is currently ranked No. 21 in the organization.

That makes the proposed package a significant investment for a player carrying substantial uncertainty.

Robert is earning $20 million this season and also has a team option for the 2027 campaign. Before landing on the Injured List for much of the season, he was batting .224 with two home runs, eight RBIs and a .656 OPS in 24 games and 85 at-bats.

His trajectory has also become increasingly concerning.

Following his outstanding 2023 campaign, when he hit 38 home runs in 145 games, earned an All-Star selection, and participated in the Home Run Derby, Robert has experienced a steady decline.

After posting an .857 OPS that season, he has followed with marks of .657, .661, and .656 over the next three years.

There is no question Robert still possesses the athletic ability to become an impact player if he rediscovers his previous form. That potential makes him a reasonable buy-low candidate for teams willing to assume some risk.

However, the price suggested in Bowden’s proposal appears excessive for the Rangers.

If the Mets would readily accept the opportunity to move Robert’s contract while acquiring two well-regarded prospects in return, that alone raises questions about whether such a deal would truly benefit Texas.

Even if Pence and Kling are not considered untouchable prospects, surrendering both for an injured player whose production has steadily declined would represent an unnecessary risk for a Rangers organization that should remain disciplined as it evaluates possible deadline additions.

At his best, Robert has demonstrated the rare combination of athleticism, defensive ability, and game-changing talent that few players possess.

He is capable of impacting every aspect of a game through his speed, instincts, and natural tools while providing value on both sides of the field.

Throughout his career, he has shown flashes of becoming one of baseball’s premier all-around players, and his confidence and aggressive style have often allowed him to take over games when healthy.

Those qualities continue to make him an intriguing player despite recent setbacks.

Any organization considering acquiring him would be betting on that talent re-emerging rather than simply evaluating his recent statistics.

For a contender willing to gamble on upside, Robert remains one of the most fascinating players who could become available before the trade deadline.
