Three Areas of Need for the Rangers This Offseason

The Texas Rangers will be tasked with figuring out how to upgrade their roster so they can return to the postseason for the first time since their 2023 World Series title.

After missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season, the Texas Rangers have another intriguing offseason ahead of them.

President of baseball operations Chris Young says that he and his staff will be tasked with “reshuffling their cards” in an offseason that will have its fair share of unprecedented moments.

With the World Series coming to a close this week, here are three areas that Texas will have to address as the Winter inches closer.

1 - Catcher

After going into the 2026 season expecting a catching tandem of Danny Jansen and Kyle Higashioka, it was Elias Diaz who caught the most games of anyone on the Rangers roster.

Signing Diaz at the beginning of June wound up being a huge win for Young and the front office. Not only did the veteran catcher have some hot stretches at the plate, but the Rangers' ability to control the run game improved significantly upon his arrival.

Diaz is not under contract for next season, and unless both he and Texas agree to a mutual option. Higashioka isn’t either.

Both Jansen and Logan O’Hoppe, who was acquired in a deadline deal, will be back with the Rangers next season.

Texas will need to determine if they want to roll with that tandem in 2027 or if they once again want to reach into the market for a backstop.

2 - Bullpen

Unlike the last few seasons, the Rangers actually will have a few key relievers coming back for 2027.

Jacob Latz will be back in the fold, presumably as the Texas closer after his breakout season in 2026. The Rangers will also return Robert Garcia, Chase Silseth and Cole Winn.

The biggest questions lie in the innings that will be left by Tyler Alexander and Jakob Junis, who could both be hitting the open market.

Alexander is an unrestricted free agent, while Junis has a mutual option. Combined, the two accounted for 127.1 innings of work.

Texas will need to find out the way in which they want to account for those innings next season.

3 - Outfield

Unlike the other two spots on the list, outfield isn’t a position of absolute need as Brandon Nimmo, Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter will all be under contract for 2027.

Perhaps more than anything, the Rangers will have to decide who they see as a fourth outfielder and figure out how much competition they want to create for Carter as he comes off a tough season.
