The Texas Rangers will have several questions to answer this offseason after missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season since winning the title.
After missing the playoffs for a third straight season, the Texas Rangers are back at the drawing board, looking for a way to play into October for the first time since winning the World Series title in 2023.
Undoubtedly, this offseason will be interesting for reasons outside of the Rangers' control, but with the World Series being over in ten days at the latest, the downtime is about to get rolling in full force.
In the early stages of the offseason, Texas will have several interesting questions to answer, so let’s break down three of them.
#1 Will there be changes to Skip Schumaker’s staff?
We know that Skip Schumaker will be back for his second season at the helm of the Rangers, but whether or not his staff will be back in full is a different story.
Last season, Texas admittedly lacked toughness and grit. Perhaps a change to the coaching staff could help ignite some of those things.
On the other side, the Rangers coaching staff was very fresh last season and there could be a desire to want to keep those guys in their respective roles now that they have a year of experience under their belts.
Either way, Texas will have to decide on who they want to be leading the players when the 2027 season gets underway.
#2 What does the payroll situation look like?
Perhaps this is the biggest question that everyone wants to know about their team when the offseason gets underway.
Ultimately, it’ll be up to Ray Davis and Rangers ownership to decide how much they want to spend on the team for next season.
No matter what number they come up with, Texas will need some external additions in at least a few spots, including the bullpen, which will need some work once again.
#3 What do you do with three players on mutual options?
As free agency approaches, the Rangers have mutual options on the contracts of Joc Pederson, Kyle Higashioka, and Jakob Junis.
Texas will have to decide if they want to pick up their end of the option on each of those guys, but of course, the player will only be back if they do the same.
You’d have to imagine the Rangers will certainly pick up their end on the Junis contract after how well he pitched last season and it coming in at $4 million.
As for Pederson and Higashioka, it’s certainly not as clear as to whether or not Texas would like to have one or both of those guys back, but they’ll have to decide one way or the other.
