It’s been an off-season of change for the Texas Rangers.
World Series heroes Marcus Semien, Adolis Garcia, and Jonah Heim have all moved on from their historic roles as Rangers.
Additionally, several staples from last season’s strong bullpen, such as Shawn Armstrong, Hoby Milner, Jacob Webb, and others, will be on new teams this season.
Newcomers to the lineup, such as Brandon Nimmo and Danny Jansen, will look to help Texas return to offensive glory. At the same time, new faces in the bullpen like Alexis Diaz, Jakob Junis, and Tyler Alexander will seek to continue the strong run of last year’s pen.
However, as the roster is currently shaped, it appears Chris Young and the Rangers front office certainly have more work to be done before camp breaks in about two months.
Specifically, the starting rotation will need at least another addition. Outside of the two veteran aces Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi, as well as Jack Leiter, who will enter his second full season in the big leagues, the Rangers don’t have much in terms of proven starting pitching.
Players such as Kumar Rocker, Jacob Latz, and Cody Bradford will certainly get their shot to crack the rotation and make an impact, but typically, you want to limit a “competition spot” to just one.
It would certainly be surprising if the Rangers don’t add at least one more starter, whether that is via the trade or the free agent market.
With free agency being the most likely scenario, don’t expect the Rangers to shoot at the top of the market for someone like Framber Valdez.
Rather, the Rangers front office seems primed to look for the next Tyler Mahle, Michael Lorenzen, or, going back even further, Mike Minor or Lance Lynn type of signing.
Historically, the Rangers have been really good at finding under-the-radar type of pitching acquisitions and will look to strike their magic again this winter.
As far as the bullpen goes, we saw the Rangers add Jakob Junis over the weekend as their pen rebuild continues.
Texas certainly as what you’d think will be the majority of the pen, with the likes of Chris Martin and Robert Garcia returning as well as new additions of Alexis Diaz, Tyler Alexander, and now Junis.
Still, one would have to assume that the Rangers are still shopping and could be likely to strike one or two more deals to help out the pen where they see fit.
