The Texas Rangers do not have easy choices in front of them as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches.
The second half of the 2026 Major League Baseball season will be at a crucial point in less than a week when the Trade Deadline hits.
The 30 MLB clubs have until Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. ET. to make trades. For some, a shot at contending in the postseason will drive a decision. For others, a chance to get young talent under the realization that the playoffs are not in the cards will also drive decisions.
For the Texas Rangers, those decisions might be more complicated.
After beating the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, 4-3, to open the series, Texas is 55-52 and winners of four of its last five games. However, while the team is winning consistently at the moment, it has never lasted for a long period of time.
Throughout the season, the Rangers have battled to stay above the .500 mark. Their flaws have been exposed multiple times over, but right now, they are doing enough to maintain a 2.5-game lead in the American League West Division.
That’s what makes the Rangers' situation so difficult to define heading into the Trade Deadline. Should they act as aggressive buyers, or is it not worth it?
Recently, Tim Britton of The Athletic put each of the 30 clubs across seven tiers that correspond with what should be done at the Deadline. For example, Tier 1, which is titled "World Series or bust", is solely occupied by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But the Rangers are in Tier 4, which is titled "Is this really worth it?" Tier 4 is the most heavily occupied, with nine teams taking up its space.
It is a fitting title for the situation Texas finds itself in, because the front office will have to think long and hard about how it wants to approach the Deadline. Will making a trade really move the needle for the Rangers, or will holding out inevitably hurt them?
Texas is one of those clubs where an abundance of breathing room is not a luxury to be enjoyed, especially in the second half of the season. Sure, there is plenty of baseball left to be played, but one bad skid can bring things crashing down.
What happens if the Rangers go all in on a trade, only to miss the playoffs? Conversely, what if they do facilitate a trade that ends up being very beneficial? That is what they, and the rest of the teams occupying Tier 4, must figure out.
