Last season, Rangers fans were introduced to Cody Freeman, who got a 36-game “cup of coffee” stint at the big league level.
In 121 at-bats, Freeman hit .228 with a .258 OBP and a .342 SLG with three home runs and 15 RBI to go along with it.
However, what didn’t show up in the box score was Freeman’s ability to work counts and cause stress to opposing pitchers.
As the Rangers offense as a whole looks to shift towards that type of mentality in 2026, that quality will certainly play to Freeman’s advantage.
Defensively, Freeman was solid in 2025, showing great versatility by playing games at second base, third base, left field, and right field.
Freeman will undoubtedly be one of the players to watch during Spring Training this year, as he has a real chance to break camp with the big league team for the first time.
It’s certainly not hard to see a situation where Freeman potentially platoons with Josh Smith over at second base following Marcus Semien’s departure.
Even if it’s not second base, Freeman’s versatile glove alone makes him an attractive roster candidate.
The only potential hiccup to Freeman’s case coming out of camp could be that the Rangers might feel he needs to be somewhere he can play most days, therefore potentially giving the roster spot edge to a more veteran player like Sam Haggerty.
Despite that, Freeman is still almost certain to get a chance to solidify himself at the big league level in 2026.
Up until this point, it’s clear that the Rangers have really been impressed with Freeman and the way that he plays the game.
With a solid year in 2026, Freeman could very well push his way into the orginizations’ long term plans.
