Jacob deGrom notched his 100th career win after throwing five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts to go along with it.
Monday night’s 2-1 Texas Rangers win over the St. Louis Cardinals was one that Jacob deGrom will never forget.
deGrom notched his 100th career win after throwing five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts to go along with it.
“It means a lot,” deGrom said when speaking about his 100th career win.
“Obviously, I haven’t had a season where I’ve had a ton of wins, and it’s taken me a while to get to 100, but the goal is to win baseball games, and that’s a mark that’s really cool for me. Back in the day, what, it used to be 200 or 300, but to get to the 100 mark is really an awesome thing,” deGrom said.
Rangers manager Skip Schumaker will look back on deGrom’s 100th win with fond memories, but that certainly will not be the case for some of the other 99.
“Unfortunately, I was on the other side of a lot of those wins,” Schumaker said, referencing his playing career.
“He’s been so dominant throughout his career. It’s so nice to see and so fun to be a part of his 100th win," Schumaker continued.
"The boys were so excited in there, they had a little celebration for him already. We needed it, we needed that strong five innings. He probably could have gone longer; we just didn’t play clean baseball in the first inning, and it probably cost him an extra inning, but five shutout, it was a really good job,” Schumaker said.
The celebration that Schumaker referenced was meaningful for deGrom as well, and to him says a lot about the clubhouse culture the Rangers have created.
“It’s really cool,” deGrom said when talking about the celebration his teammates had for him.
“I’ve said it since Spring Training, we have a great group here. Everybody’s pulling for everybody and rooting for each other just as much as they’re rooting for themselves, so it’s a good group. For the guys to be as excited as they were, it was awesome,” deGrom said.
For deGrom, his 100th win came with some reflection on just how far his journey in Major League Baseball has taken him.
“If you would have thought as a kid your goal was just to play Major League Baseball, and for it to become a reality and win 100 games in the Major Leagues, it’s honestly crazy to think about…,” deGrom said.
