Texas Rangers outfield prospect Aaron Zavala was one of the best players in all of big-league camp during his short stint.

Last Spring Training, Texas Rangers outfielder Alejandro Osuna had the kind of camp that young prospects dream of.

Ousna hit .429 with five doubles and 15 RBIs and made a lasting impression on the Rangers' front office, leading to his big-league call-up in May.

This Spring Training, another Rangers outfield prospect got off to a scorching hot start and turned some heads within the organization.

Rangers outfield prospect Aaron Zavala was one of the best players in all of big-league camp during his short stint.

Zavala hit .458 with a .480 on-base percentage, an eye-popping 1.272 OPS, 11 hits, five runs, two home runs, and two stolen bases in 24 at-bats.

During the Rangers’ most recent wave of minor league send-downs, Zavala was optioned to minor-league camp. But his successful Spring Training continues a run of strong play that could see him in the big leagues sooner rather than later.

Over the offseason, Zavala was one of the best players in the Mexican Winter League as he hit .358 with an OPS of 1.081 with six home runs, 19 RBIs, and 20 runs scored in just 27 games.

Zavala’s .358 batting average ranked second among hitters with 100-or-more plate appearances.

Last season with Double-A Frisco, Zavala put forth a solid campaign, hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 55 RBI.

After his successful run, Rangers manager Skip Schumaker has clearly outlined what Zavala’s next steps are.

“I think the next step is to prove it in Triple-A,” Schumaker said. “I’ve said it before, but I want him to go down, make it really hard on us, kick the door down. If we need somebody, make it be you, and I think that’s the message.”

Schumaker also wants to see Zavala improve defensively while he is down with Round Rock in Triple-A.

“He needs to continue to progress on the outfield defense as well,” Schumaker said. “He’s got a good arm, the routes he’s working on as well to get to the ball where he needs to be, really good [and] consistent as well.”

Still, Zavala’s short time in big-league camp was enough to get Schumaker’s attention and put him on his new manager’s radar.

“It was a really good camp, he [Zavala] did what he needed to do to be put on the radar,” Schumaker finished.

There’s no doubt that with another hot start in Triple-A, we could be seeing Zavala in Arlington sooner rather than later.
