The Texas Rangers didn’t imagine they would be at a point in 2025 in which they felt the need to call up young outfielder Alejandro Osuna.
However, as they struggled out of the gates and the summer months were fast approaching, the Rangers' front office felt like they needed a spark.
When Joc Pederson went down with a wrist injury that caused him to miss significant time, Texas felt like it had a prime opportunity to introduce the aforementioned spark.
In a time when Rangers players as a whole were not putting together super high-quality at-bats, Osuna was a refreshing presence.
Instantly, Osuna was able to come up to the big-league level and work pitchers as well as draw walks at a high rate.
In 63 games last season, Osuna drew 21 walks to go along with a .212 batting average, a .313 on-base percentage, a .278 slugging percentage, a pair of home runs, and 15 RBI.
Defensively, Osuna showed some solid signs playing in all three outfield positions, showing off impressive range and solid ball-tracking skills.
Flash forward to 2026, and Osuna’s role with the team looks to be an interesting and somewhat unclear one.
Spring training will be big for Osuna, as there is certainly a world in which he plays well enough to earn a spot on the team.
Similar to Cody Freeman, it will be interesting to see if the Rangers view Osuna as someone who they want to get every day playing time at Triple A or if they’re comfortable having him on their bench if he earns a spot on the big-league team.
The Rangers' outfield currently seems pretty set with Wyatt Langford, Evan Carter, and new addition Brandon Nimmo, so it appears that Osuna is going to be competing for the fourth outfield role.
Osuna’s most obvious competition figures to be Michael Helman, who looked solid in his little playing time last season.
Sam Haggerty and Ezequiel Duran could also factor into the team’s outfield as versatile utility players.
Ultimately, Osuna will have to play well with what could be just a little bit of opportunity at the big league level in 2026.
However, we know that if you can hit, you will stick, and if Osuna can come up and have some success at the plate, he will no doubt force first-year manager Skip Schumaker into getting him in the lineup.
