Mitch Moreland was drafted by Texas in 2007 and was part of five playoff teams with the Rangers.
Former Texas Rangers fan favorite and World Series champion Mitch Moreland has retired from baseball.
The longtime first baseman made the announcement to WEEI.com on Tuesday.
“I’m retired,” Mitch Moreland said. “There you go. I’m done. I’m done playing. I’ve enjoyed the family life too much in the last year and a half. Being there for my kids. It got to the point where they were away from me during the season and in school. I wanted to be there for them, and be around the family more.”
Moreland was in Fort Myers, Florida as a guest of the Boston Red Sox at Spring Training when he called it a career. He has yet to file any retirement paperwork, but hasn’t played in the Majors since 2021.
The Rangers drafted Moreland in 2007 out of Mississippi State in the 17th round. He became the club’s starting first baseman late in the 2010 season and was part of the last five Rangers playoff teams.
Moreland signed with Boston as a free agent in 2016 and found his greatest success with the Red Sox. He also became a fan favorite in Beantown, earning the nickname “Mitchy Two Bags” for being a double machine.
Moreland made an All-Star Game appearance in 2018, the same year the Red Sox won the World Series. He played 12 years, as playing for the San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics.
