Even though Jacob deGrom is doing some light throwing on the current road trip, the Texas Rangers don’t plan to increase his throwing program until the club returns to Arlington next week.
The staff ace still hasn’t thrown from the mound since going on the injured list April 29 with right elbow inflammation. The plan is for team doctors to examine deGrom back in Texas after the road trip ends Sunday at the Oakland Athletics.
At that point, the next decisions will be made for his rehab. Texas manager Bruce Bochy estimated recently that deGrom was still two-to-three weeks from returning, pushing his possible availability to late May at the earliest.
He is eligible to come off the IL on Sunday, but that obviously will not happen.
The Rangers have been able to absorb the loss of deGrom with Dane Dunning moving into the rotation. Dunning, previously stretched out as a long reliever, has made a pair of solid starts in deGrom’s turn.
Texas beat the Athletics, 5-0, on Saturday to take a 2-1 series lead.
The Rangers continue to lead the American League West and open a homestand with three games against the Atlanta Braves starting Monday.
