The Tampa Bay Rays settled for a series split after a 12-4 loss to the Yankees. Drew Rasmussen struggled, but the offense stayed productive as Junior Caminero launched his 27th home run. Tampa Bay now turns its focus to a key series against the Mariners before the All-Star break.

The Tampa Bay Rays could finish the job on Thursday.

The team got blown out 12-4 by the New York Yankees and will have to settle for a 4-game series split with their division rival.

Here is what you need to know from the contest.

Rasmussen Struggles on the Mound

It was a rare occurrence for the Rays pitching staff on Thursday, they just didn't have it.

Featured stories

The newly named All-Star was only able to go 2.1 innings, his shortest start of the season, after allowing 6 earned runs, all coming in the third inning.

Sometimes these games happen. Luckily for the Rays it's not often, however it is now the last two starts that Rasmussen has allowed 5 or more runs in a start, both coming after he was announced to the All-Star team. Not saying it's anything, but it's obviously worth paying attention to following the break.

The bullpen struggled in the game as well, as they were asked to cover 6.2 innings of work. All relievers allowed at least a run in their appearances, and  Casey Legumina allowed 3 runs across for the Yankees. Ben Williamson was able to pitch the ninth as a position player on the mound to try and save at least one arm heading into the weekend series.

For Once, Rays Bats were Fine in Loss

It's normally the other way around, the pitching staff does everything they need to do to secure the win and the offense doesn't show up. That wasn't the case on Thursday.

The Rays offense scored 4 runs and picked up 10 hits in the contest. They did struggle at times, going 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position, but the bats were hardly the problem in the loss against New York. Tampa Bay forced the Yankees to use 7 pitchers in the contest. Something that could have an impact on the next 3 games before the week off for the All-Star Game.

Junior Gets It Going Again

After going 4 straight games without one, Junior Caminero hit his 27th home run of the season on Thursday. He is now tied for 4th in MLB in that category.

He will have 3 more games before the All-Star break to try and reach 30 and stay 'warmed up,' as he will represent Tampa Bay in the upcoming Home Run Derby.

With the two teams each taking two games inside the series, the tiebreaker will have to wait until they meet again once more in the second to last series of the season. The Rays currently lead the season series 6-3 and will need to take 1 of the last 4 games against New York to hold the tiebreaker to win the division if they happen to end the season with the same record.

The Rays will remain at home for the final series before the All-Star break as they welcome the Seattle Mariners to town. Nick Martinez (7-2, 2.61 ERA) is set to get the start for Tampa Bay as he looks to get the pitching staff back on the right path. He will face right handed veteran Luis Castillo (3-7, 4.79 ERA) for the Mariners. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
