The Tampa Bay Rays walked into Yankee Stadium for a doubleheader on Tuesday and left, clinching the American League East.
And they did it in pretty convincing fashion.
After dropping the opening game 2-0, Tampa Bay bounced back with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap, securing its fifth division title in franchise history and first since 2021.
But this wasn't just about winning the division.
The Rays also secured home-field advantage throughout the American League playoffs, putting themselves in an excellent position as October approaches.
And Drew Rasmussen made sure the celebration wouldn't have to wait another day.
The right-hander delivered one of the best performances of his career, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning while striking out 11 Yankees.
Rasmussen was nine outs away from joining Matt Garza as the only pitchers in franchise history to throw a no-hitter before Heliot Ramos doubled to open the seventh.
He finished with a career-high 114 pitches, allowing just one hit and one earned run.
That's exactly the type of performance Tampa Bay wants from its ace heading into the postseason. And if any doubt was left on who should be handed the ball for game one of the playoffs, Rasmussen easily silenced the critics.
But the Rays offense deserves plenty of credit, too.
Tampa Bay was unable to get a home run over the short porch at Yankee Stadium, but still managed to get 11 hits in the contest, only striking out six times and giving a good enough cushion for Kevin Cash to utilize his best pitchers down the stretch.
Ryan Vilade brought home the first run with an RBI groundout in the third inning.
Then came the seventh.
Taylor Walls laid down a bunt that caught the Yankees off guard, allowing Chandler Simpson to score when nobody covered first base.
Two batters later, Yandy Díaz delivered a two-run single to extend Tampa Bay's lead to 4-0.
Diaz had a great game, something that has been long overdue during this great stretch lately for the rest of the Rays' offense.
He added another two-run single in the ninth inning, giving him four RBI on the night and putting the finishing touches on the division-clinching victory.
For a player who has struggled recently, that's an encouraging development with October right around the corner, but the bigger picture is what makes this moment special.
The Rays have spent the entire season proving they belong among baseball's best teams. Plenty of national analysts predicted this team would finish at the bottom of the American League East. Instead, they have held the lead as the best team in the American League for the majority of the season.
And now, they have a division championship to show for it.
With Rasmussen looking like a legitimate Game 1 starter, Díaz finding his swing, and Tampa Bay securing home-field advantage, there's plenty of reason to be excited about what's ahead. This may truly be the most complete team since Erik Neander has been in charge of the organization.
The team still has two games left against the Yankees before they finish their regular season this weekend on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The mission slightly changes for the next few games, as panic is no longer on the menu. The team can slowly work on fine-tuning and getting some questions answered for their finishing touches to the playoff roster, in anticipation of who they will face in the American League Division Series.
