The Tampa Bay Rays beat the San Diego Padres 7-6 for their 81st win and third straight victory. Nick Martinez delivered another quality start, Junior Caminero and Jonathan Aranda homered, and Bryan Baker recorded his MLB-leading 39th save.
After a great all-around effort, the Tampa Bay Rays picked up their 81st win of the season and clinched the series at home against the San Diego Padres with a 7-6 victory.
It was a big night at the plate, as well as a solid performance from the pitching staff, as they found a way to sneak a one-run victory over the Padres, who are fighting for a playoff spot in the National League.
Here's what you need to know from the contest.
Martinez starts strong, bullpen ends sharp.
It was another quality start for all-star Nick Martinez.
The Rays' veteran went six strong innings and allowed three unearned runs across seven hits, striking out four batters. Most of the runs against him came at the very end of his start.
Kevin Cash replaced him with Garrett Cleavinger, who had a rough outing and was quickly taken out of the game after allowing three runs, but then things got remotely better very quickly.
The two trusted arms in the bullpen, Kevin Kelly and Bryan Baker, went 2.2 innings of shutout baseball. Baker picked up his 39th save of the season as he continues to lead Major League Baseball in that stat.
Big hits from the raised bats
It was a great night at the plate for the Tampa Bay Rays. Both Junior Caminero and Jonathan Aranda picked up home runs to help Tampa Bay pick up their third straight win. Caminiti's long ball was his 36th of the season, as he continues to make a case for the American League MVP. At worst, he's currently seen as the award's runner-up.
Other players like Yandy Diaz, who picked up three RBIs, and Chandler Simpson, who also knocked in a run, excelled for the Rays and continued to show that this offense is much improved in the second half of the season.
Signs of life?
After a few games of struggling, the Rays' bottom of the batting order is starting to get some momentum. Both Cedric Mullins and Taylor Walls recorded a hit and found themselves on base in the contest, going for a combined 3 for 7 on the night.
Both players recorded a run against the Padres, showing the importance of how much it's needed to add the additional base running for the top of the order.
If the bottom third of the Rays' offense can continue to provide help for the big bats of Tampa Bay, they could certainly start once again to grow a lead against the rest of the American League East.
They'll look to pick up win number 82 and a series sweep against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, as All-Star Drew Rasmussen will get the start. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 pm Eastern.
