The Tampa Bay Rays' return home has quickly turned ugly after a 10-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles extended their losing streak to three games. Freddy Peralta showed improvement in his third Rays start, but a bullpen collapse and another quiet day from the top of the lineup leave Tampa Bay needing a
It wasn't the best return home for the Tampa Bay Rays, as the team was crushed at Tropicana Field to end the weekend.
After losing in two one-run games to begin the series, the team was blown out 10-2 in the Third game on Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles. The three-game losing streak moves the team to 74 and 49 on the season and shrinks the division lead over the New York Yankees to just six games.
Here is what you need to know from the contest.
Peralta wasn't the problem.
Although Freddy Peralta picked up his tenth loss of the season on Sunday, he wasn't the issue. The recently acquired pitcher was making his third start for the Rays and, frankly, pitched OK. He went 4.2 innings and allowed only two runs after striking out two Orioles batters and allowing only one hit in the contest.
The later pieces in the bullpen that Kevin Cash chose did not work well against the Baltimore offense. Steven Matz couldn't even get through an inning, as he allowed five earned runs on four hits, including a home run by Colton Cowser in the top of the sixth inning.
It didn't get much better after that, however, as Joe Boyle finished the game in hopes of just salvaging the rest of the arms for Tampa Bay. He went 3.1 innings, allowed two more runs off two hits, and struck out five in the contest. Boyle went 84 pitches, and after being recently called up, it's fair to assume that he might be optioned back down following his long stint.
Rays offense lacked opportunities.
It wasn't a slow day at the plate for Tampa Bay, but they did lack opportunities. The team picked up nine hits in the contest but also struck out ten times. Ryan Vilade hit a home run in the fourth inning and gave the Rays life, but it just never was enough in the game. Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero went hitless as well, and the top of the lineup that included those two plus Yandy Diaz combined for 1 for 12 in the outing.
Tampa Bay was 2 for 6 with runners in scoring position. Something that must improve on Monday
Can you avoid the sweep?
Thankfully for Tampa Bay, this is not a three-game series. The team still has an opportunity to avoid the sweep as they will play on Monday against the Orioles in Game 4, the series finale at Tropicana Field. This is a crucial game if they hope to win the season series against Baltimore, as they're currently down 6-3 after the first nine games. With only four games remaining, Baltimore could clinch the season series with a win at Tropicana before the final three games next week at Camden Yards.
Nick Martinez will get the start for the Rays and will look for his 13th win of the season. He will face right-handed pitcher Brandon Young for the Orioles. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Eastern.
