The Rays were blown out 14-3 by the Angels on Saturday as Drew Rasmussen struggled early and the bullpen completely unraveled late. Yandy Díaz stayed hot with another homer, but Tampa Bay’s pitching staff had one of its roughest performances of the season.
The Tampa Bay Rays stumble again and get blown out in the middle game of the series against the Los Angeles Angels, 14-3.
After bouncing back in the series opener on Friday night after a rocky road trip, the Rays' pitching staff had a rare rough outing, and the Angels took advantage early and often.
Here are the main takeaways you need to know from the contest.
Rasmussen just wasn't himself.
It's very uncommon to see Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen pitch wild and lack control on the mound, but that's what manager Kevin Cash got on Saturday. In the first inning, after sitting down the first batter and putting Mike Trout in an 0-2 count, he lost composure and quickly loaded the bases. Angels outfielder Wade Meckler made him pay with a grand slam.
Rasmussen was pulled after only going four innings. He allowed five earned runs and four hits and struck out four batters. This is only his second start all season where he didn't go at least five innings.
Yandy Just Keeps Mashing
Although the Rays only scored three runs in this game, some of the hot bats from the road trip followed them back home, especially Yandy Diaz.
The 34-year-old continues to prove that he is one of the most underrated players in baseball, hitting another home run in the contest. This was his third homer of the last two games in the Angels series. He now has a .934 OPS and 11 long balls on the season.
Back End of Bullpen Struggles
The Rays' bullpen gave up 3 home runs and nine more runs after Rasmussen was pulled on Saturday, including one from Angels star Mike Trout.
Andrew Wantz and Cole Sulser, who made his first appearance since returning from the injured list, combined for seven runs allowed across the final 2 innings of work for the team. As the team barely holds on to a lead in the American League East, an aggressive focus toward adding bullpen depth continues to make more sense each day we get closer to the trade deadline.
The Rays will be back in action on Sunday for the final game of the series with the Angels for the rubber match. Shane McClanahan (5-2, 2.52 ERA) will take the mound for the Rays and will face Angels pitcher Jack Kochanowicz (2-3, 4.99 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 PM EST.
