The Rays couldn't build on Friday's momentum, falling 4-3 to the Marlins. Shane McClanahan started strong before Miami broke through in the fifth, while Tampa Bay's offense managed just one hit through seven innings. The series now comes down to Sunday's rubber match in Miami.

The Tampa Bay Rays couldn't capitalize on Friday's series-opening shutout win as they fell to the Miami Marlins 4-3 to even the 3-game road trip at LoanDepot Park.

Here is what you need to know about the contest.

McClanahan Starts Strong, But Can't Finish

The Rays were hoping for a solid start from Shane McClanahan to keep the pitching staff's momentum moving in the right direction after Friday's successful outing, and what started exactly as they hoped ended with too much traffic.

He retired 5 in a row to begin his start, until a 2-out bunt single gave the game the first base runner. He then immediately allowed a walk in the second, but thankfully found his way out of it without allowing any runs.

He started with four scoreless innings, and then things changed quickly in the fifth.  McClanahan gave up a solo home run to Javier Sanoja in the bottom of the fifth, and problems kept coming. After allowing a walk, the Marlins capitalized after a stolen base throw attempt was thrown into the outfield to move the runner to third. Marlins Joe Mack brought him in the next at bat. Multiple fielding blunders helped the Marlins put 2 on the board.

After starting strong, he was pulled after five innings. He gave up 4 earned runs off 8 hits, struck out six, and walked two.

Offense Just Couldn't Rally

The Rays bats struggled hat to begin the game against the Marlins as Miami's pitching retired 10 straight. Cedric Mullins was close to breaking the hitless streak with potentially his second home run of the series, but fell flat.

The Rays didn't pick up their first hit until Victor Mesa Jr singled in the top of the sixth inning. Tampa Bay got two runners in scoring position, but couldn't capitalize after Junior Caminero grounded out to end the inning.

Yandy Diaz got the Rays on the board first, after an RBI single in the top of the eighth. The team worked former Tampa Bay pitcher in Marlins Pete Fairbanks as they rallied for two extra runs, but it wasn't enough to extend the game.

Chandler Simpson Can't Catch a Break.

He came in during the bottom of the ninth to help the rally, but was sitting due to another injury he picked up on Friday. After dealing with a busted lip earlier in the week that required stitches, Simpson was removed in game one of the series due to left thumb discomfort. Speedy players like Simpson, who Kevin Cash and the Rays rely on, need to stay healthy during this summer stretch if they want to continue to hold the AL East lead.

The Rays will look to steal the series from the Marlins as the rubber match will take place on Sunday at LoanDepot Park. Griffin Jax (1-4, 4.76 ERA) will get the start for Tampa Bay. He will face Marlins Sandy Alcantara (4-4, 4.59 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 PM EST.
