The Tampa Bay Rays bounced back Sunday with a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels to secure another home series victory at Tropicana Field. Shane McClanahan continued his dominant return season, while closer Bryan Baker tied a franchise record with his 16th save before June.
The Tampa Bay Rays get another series win at Tropicana Field as they take down the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, 5-2.
The team’s pitching returned to form after stumbling in Saturday’s blowout loss.
Here is what you need to know from the series finale.
McClanahan Gave Pitching Staff Needed Boost
It was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Rays' pitching unit as Shane McClanahan continues to have an amazing season on the mound after returning from injury. He picked up the win after putting up five solid innings of work and only allowing one run.
He has now gone seven straight starts with five or more innings pitched in an outing. He is now 6-2 with a 2.45 ERA on the year and making a solid case for an American League All-Star appearance.
Rays Were Robbed!
The lead had a chance to grow in the bottom of the third when the Rays loaded the bases. Taylor Walls hit a fly ball that was set for the seats, and former Tampa Bay outfielder Jose Siri robbed him of a grand slam.
Thankfully, the four runs were not needed for the Rays to get back in the win column and win the series against the Halos.
Tampa Bay did get one over the fence, though, as Jonathan Aranda hit his 11th of the season in the first inning off Angels pitching Jack Kochanowicz.
Baker Ties Rays History
Rays Closer Bryan Baker picked up his 16th save of the season with his scoreless ninth inning of work Sunday. With that, he tied Fernando Rodney with the most saves in a season before the month of June.
The rest of the bullpen looked solid as well, as both Casey Legumina and Kevin Kelly picked up holds in the game; it was an overall solid outing from the Rays' pitching staff.
The Rays will remain at home as they finish their homestand, hosting the Detroit Tigers beginning on Monday. Griffin Jax (1-3, 3.60 ERA) is scheduled to get the start for the Rays. The Tigers pitcher is currently TBD. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM EST.
