The Tampa Bay Rays were swept by the Red Sox after the All-Star Break, watching their AL East lead nearly disappear. With the rotation struggling and the offense failing in clutch situations, Tampa Bay enters a critical four-game series against Toronto under mounting pressure.

Things keep getting worse for the Tampa Bay Rays.

After heading into the All-Star Break with a 3-game lead for the division, the team was swept by AL East rivals the Boston Red Sox following a 6-1 final on Sunday. Tampa Bay now holds the division by a thread entering the final few days of July.

Here is what you need to know from the contest.

Rotation Continues to Struggle

For the fourth straight game, the starting pitching for the Rays is a mess. Shane McClanahan picked up another loss on Sunday, his fourth consecutive decision going against him after allowing 6 runs, 4 earned, off 5 hits. He struck out only 3 batters and walked just as many in one of his worst starts of the season.

This is exactly what you do not want to see from your position group, which has shown the most consistency on the squad this year. The Rays need to regroup quickly before this gets out of hand.

Craig Kimbrel and Chris Roycroft appeared out of the bullpen for the Rays, both giving shutout outings.

Rays Refused to Capitalize

Tampa Bay had their opportunities to put some runs on the board Sunday, but they could not capitalize on any of them. The only run of the game came on a rare inside-the-park homer by Victor Mesa Jr. after the catcher dropped the ball out of his glove, tagging him at the plate.

The Rays had 8 hits and 5 baserunners from walks in the game but were 0 for 15 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base against the Red Sox pitching staff. Both Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda continue to struggle at the plate since the All-Star break with 2 strikeouts apiece.

Division Race Getting Close

As for the Red Sox, it's the 13th straight win for the team, and they are now only 6 games behind Tampa Bay for the division lead. They are very close to making this AL East race a 3-team battle.

The Rays will be right back in action on Monday and will travel across the border to take on the Toronto Blue Jays. The team will begin a 4-game series against another division rival, and can not afford to have the same result they did at Fenway Park. Nick Martinez (8-2, 2.65 ERA) will take the mound for the Rays as he will take on right-hander Dylan Cease (6-4, 2.56 ERA) for the Blue Jays. Both pitchers will be making their first start since appearing for the American League in the All-Star Game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST.
