Nick Martinez is emerging as one of MLB’s best pitchers in his first season with the Tampa Bay Rays. The veteran right-hander owns a 1.51 ERA through 10 starts and continues building a strong AL Cy Young case while helping Tampa Bay lead the AL East.
The Tampa Bay Rays are off to a brilliant start this season, and a big reason is their pitching staff, especially the performance of veteran pitcher Nick Martinez.
In a game that was easily overshadowed by the return of the New York Yankees, a pitcher, Gerrit Cole, made his season debut for the first time since his return from Tommy John surgery in 2024. Nick Martinez continues to show that he is one of the best pitchers in the American League this season.
The veteran right-hander gave the Rays six strong innings on Friday night en route to taking down their AL East rivals, 4-2, in the series-opening game in the Bronx. He only allowed one earned run off nine hits across the outing, and it was a solo home run to Yankees catcher Austin Wells.
So far in his first season with Tampa Bay, he holds a 1.51 ERA across his first 10 starts, which is the second-best in all of MLB. This is easily the best start of his career, one that goes all the way back to when he made his MLB debut in 2014 for the Texas Rangers. Now, already with his fourth MLB team, Martinez is proving that even at 35, you can be one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.
The Rays' entire pitching rotation has been very impressive to begin the year, and one of the main reasons they lead the American League East by 5.5 games and hold the best record in the junior circuit.
With players resurrecting their careers like Martinez, Griffin Jax, and the return of Shane McClanahan after his major injury, holding him out for over two years of action, the Rays are in a great position to make a deep postseason run this year.
With the American League easily having a down year, Ray's general manager, Eric Neander, has a great opportunity to be aggressive at the MLB trade deadline and add even more to the repertoire of this team to make sure it doesn't go to waste.
Martinez, who has a strong case to be the frontrunner for the American League Cy Young as we enter the summer, is also a prime candidate to be the starting pitcher for this year's upcoming MLB All-Star Game, in what would be his first appearance in the game.
The Cy Young candidate is set to make his next start when the Tampa Bay Rays return home on Friday, May 9th, as they open up a six-game homestand beginning with the Los Angeles Angels.
