Tampa Bay's 22-year-old superstar earned his latest accolade on Thursday night.
Tampa Bay Rays All-Star third baseman Junior Caminero has been selected for the All-MLB second team, the organization announced Thursday.
It is the latest accolade Caminero earns for a record setting season at just 22 years old. He is the only player on his team of five nominees to make the cut for either of the teams, and it is the first of his young career. Cleveland Guardians All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez was the first team choice.
Caminero constructed one of the greatest seasons in franchise history, launching 45 homers, earning his first All-Star selection, and coming incredibly close to becoming the youngest player ever to win the Home Run Derby.
In 154 games, Caminero hit .264/.311/.535, with 28 doubles, 110 RBI and 93 runs. His 45 blasts were the sixth-most in Major League Baseball and second among third basemen behind Seattle's Eugenio Suarez (49).
Caminero became the second Ray to hit 40 home runs (or more) in a season along with Carlos Pena (46 in 2007) and joined the Milwaukee Braves’ Eddie Mathews (47 in 1953) as the only players in major-league history to tally 45 or more home runs in an age-21-or-younger season (age as of June 30).
He also tied the Rays franchise record with four multi-homer games and launched six home runs or more through all six calendar months of the season, becoming the first player in MLB history to accomplish the feat in an age-21-or-younger season. Winning the award would make Caminero the youngest player in franchise history to receive a Silver Slugger, surpassing Evan Longoria’s age-23 season in 2009.
