The Tampa Bay Rays are back among MLB's top World Series contenders after sweeping the San Diego Padres. Tampa Bay jumped to No. 4 in Bleacher Report's MLB Power Rankings while holding a 4.5-game AL East lead over the New York Yankees.
The Tampa Bay Rays are beginning a new week on a four-game winning streak.
The team completed a sweep over the weekend against the San Diego Padres and moved to 82-54 on the season. They now hold a 4.5-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East standings.
The team continues to find ways to win and is being rewarded across the industry as a true World Series contender.
On Monday, Bleacher Report released its latest MLB Power Rankings and the Rays have once again found themselves back in the Top-5. The team jumped up to 4th after falling to sixth last week following a shaky homestand.
"The Rays are 18-9 in August and have extended their lead in the AL East standings from 2.5 to 4.5 games over the Yankees along the way," said B/R writer Joel Reuter. "They improved to 46-23 at Tropicana Field with their three-game sweep of the Padres, so securing the AL's best record and home-field advantage will carry extra importance."
The August record can be looked at in two different ways. Obviously, they had a strong road trip, going 9-0 in the middle of the month, but it was a very shaky homestand immediately afterward. But the team seems to be back on track and is grinding for wins as they enter the final month of the regular season.
The team's pitching staff is stepping up despite injuries, and most of the batting order is starting to produce, although there is quite a bit more to be desired towards the bottom of the Rays' lineup. This team is far from perfect, but they have the correct tools to make a deep postseason run when October rolls around.
The Rays are also holding ground at the fourth spot in MLB.com's latest Power Rankings as well. MLB Writer Will Leitch compared the good times on the field to how the fans are starting to really buy into the moment.
"It is definitely a sign of how well this season has gone for the Rays that they opened up the upper deck at Tropicana Field this weekend for the first time since the 2023 postseason. One suspects it'll be open this postseason as well, a place the Rays are definitely going to be."
It's an exciting time to be a Rays fan. There's no doubt about that. The front office, led by Erik Neander, made some great decisions at the MLB trade deadline and brought in the right reinforcements to help both the pitching staff and the batting order. We'll see what decisions they make in a few days, when they're able to call up two more players as rosters expand in September.
Tampa Bay only has seven more games against divisional opponents, so the rest of their series will be crucial down the stretch.
Both rankings unanimously believe that the Milwaukee Brewers are the best team in baseball right now, and based on their record, they'd be right. The team currently has an 85-52 record, the best in MLB.
