The Rays may need to adjust their MLB Trade Deadline plans after Shea Langeliers suffered a season-ending knee injury. With one catcher off the market, Tampa Bay could turn its attention to Ryan Jeffers or make a blockbuster push for Hunter Goodman.
The Tampa Bay Rays might have to take a new approach when it comes to how they attack the MLB Trade Deadline.
As the Rays look to strengthen their roster, one position of need looks to be improving the offensive side of the catcher position.
However, one of the biggest names that was rumored to be on the market is now heading to the injured list for the rest of the season. It was reported that all-star catcher Shea Langeliers has a torn meniscus in his knee and is likely to miss the rest of the 2026 MLB season. This inevitably takes him off the trade market and is one less player the Rays can chase after before the August 3rd deadline.
There were rumors that the Rays were "sniffing" around the Langeliers market with the Athletics. However, if they wish to improve the catcher position, they will have to go elsewhere.
There are still a few prime targets that could be available before the deadline strikes next week. However, that is one less player, meaning more competition, and the price is likely to go higher.
The two other targets are Minnesota Twins Ryan Jeffers and Colorado Rockies Hunter Goodman both will likely attract different types of suitors for many different reasons.
Jeffers could be seen more as a rental, meaning the package for him would likely be a lot lower. However, for Goodman, it could need a possible blockbuster to make the acquisition possible.
The Rockies' catcher is one of the best power-hitting catchers in all of baseball. He currently has 30 home runs on the season, a stat that would currently lead the Rays' roster. By only being 26 years old, he is under club control through the 2029 season. The Rockies would likely ask for a haul of prospects to make the move possible.
However, that is something the Rays possess even in the catching department. Both Caden Bodine and Nathan Flewelling are considered two top 100 prospects and catchers in the Rays system. If the Rays were willing to make a splash, this would be the right move for Eric Neander and the rest of the Tampa Bay front office.
There is also the growing fear that if the Rays don't make a move, the Yankees will sneak in behind them. The AL East rivals are only two games behind the Rays for the division lead, with plenty of baseball to go before the postseason.
