Tampa Bay Rays star Junior Caminero is continuing his rise toward MLB superstardom after another historic start to the season. The young slugger is already making franchise history and is quickly emerging as a legitimate American League MVP contender while helping the Rays widen their AL East lead.
The Tampa Bay Rays' young talent has continued to impress so far this season. As the team gets close to playing its 50th game of the season, the Rays hold a 5.5-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East division.
And as they continue to look to improve that span between them and their division opponents while they're on their current road trip, some of their top players are making history of their own.
After coming off his first All-Star appearance in 2025, Junior Caminero is off to another hot start. One that could see him fight for the top award among batters in all of baseball.
His hot start has caught the attention of many baseball fans, even if many aren't paying attention to the success of the Rays so far this season. Caminero is making franchise history, as he is the only player in Rays history over the first 48 games of the season to have 13 home runs, 20 or more walks, and less than 40 strikeouts at the plate.
This is just one more reason he is seen as a front-runner for this season's American League MVP award.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently released his top 10 American League MVP candidates, and Caminero appeared sixth in that ranking.
If the young slugger, who is only in his second full season in the Major Leagues, continues this type of progression, he will surely rise to find himself close to becoming a finalist or winning the award at season's end. He is once again on pace to hit over 40 home runs in a season, something he did in his first year, when he hit 45 in 2025.
The Rays are off Saturday as the game against the New York Yankees was postponed due to inclement weather. They took the first game of the series 4-2 on Friday in the Bronx. The team will be back in action on Sunday to wrap up the series with the Yankees before heading to Baltimore for three games to end their divisional road trip.
