The Tampa Bay Rays can't afford to stand pat at the MLB trade deadline. After injury scares involving Yandy Díaz and Junior Caminero, Eric Neander must aggressively add talent if Tampa Bay wants to turn its AL East lead into the franchise's first World Series title.
The Tampa Bay Rays have been lucky multiple times over the past few weeks.
And the way this team is performing is a good reminder to the Rays front office that nothing can be left to chance.
After the recent injury scares to two of Tampa Bay's top hitters, Eric Neander must do everything within his power to be the most aggressive at acquiring talent and reinforcing this roster before the August 3rd MLB Trade Deadline.
Now that the MLB All-Star Game is past, all eyes should be focused on improving the Rays squad to bolster a bigger lead against the New York Yankees and the rest of their rivals for the AL East division lead as well as solidifying themselves as the best team inside the American League.
Just a few weeks ago, Yandy Diaz exited the game with a shoulder issue. He was Day-To-Day and thankfully did not need to go on the injured list. Hopefully the same type of good news will be in store for star third baseman Junior Caminero, who left Tuesday's All-Star Game after being hit by a pitch inside the batter's box. He is currently listed as Day-to-Day as well, so things are thankfully trending in the right direction.
But this is giving off bad vibes regarding whether this team can hold it together as currently constructed. And also reminds the Rays fan base of what happened last time the team was sitting atop of the Junior circuit.
In 2023, the Rays attempted to make a blockbuster splash and acquire Shohei Ohtani. The deal fell through, but the team still found themselves in the postseason. However once they got there, injuries caught up to them and they were quickly swept by the eventual World Series winning Texas Rangers. Pitchers like Shane McClanahan were sidelined, and the team was nowhere near full strength, nor did the team's front office do enough at the deadline to ensure replacements were available.
After the 'warning shot' to Caminero on a national stage, the only thing left to do is act. The team is already rumored to be in trade discussions with multiple players, including Tarik Skubal, Ketel Marte, and Luis Arraez. It's a great start, but just one player won't do.
Infield and outfield depth could use assistance, and you can never have too many premier and healthy arms heading into October. At a minimum, I'm hoping for 3 impactful players to be dealt to the Rays before the deadline strikes.
