The Tampa Bay Rays remain without a World Series championship after losing to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2026. Despite three Fall Classic appearances since 2008 and a franchise-record 106 combined wins this season, Tampa Bay joins three other MLB teams still searching for their first title.
The Tampa Bay Rays hopes of winning their first World Series championship came to an end Wednesday night following a 4-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 5 at Tropicana Field.
And while Tampa Bay has accomplished plenty throughout the last two decades, the organization now finds itself in an unfortunate position when compared to several other successful franchises.
The Rays are one of just seven MLB franchises to reach the World Series at least three times over the last 20 seasons. However, Tampa Bay is the only organization among those seven that hasn't won a championship during that stretch.
It's an unfortunate distinction considering how much success the Rays have experienced throughout their relatively short history.
Tampa Bay made its first World Series appearance in 2008, eventually falling to the Philadelphia Phillies in five games.
The organization returned to the Fall Classic in 2020, but once again came up short, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.
And after another impressive postseason run in 2026, the Rays suffered a similar result against Milwaukee.
Tampa Bay has now won just four of its 16 World Series games across those three appearances.
Unfortunately, the Rays also find themselves among an increasingly smaller group of franchises still searching for their first championship.
With Milwaukee winning its first World Series title Wednesday, only four MLB organizations remain without a championship.
That includes the Rays, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, and Seattle Mariners. They will have to wait another season to fight for that chance again, and unfortunately, the next season may not arrive in 2027, with a potential MLB lockout looming.
Perhaps the most frustrating part is that Tampa Bay has reached the World Series as many times as those other three organizations combined.
And while reaching the Fall Classic is certainly an accomplishment, the Rays have been unable to take that final step.
Tampa Bay will still hang two banners when they return to Tropicana Field the next time they play, whether that's 2027 or sometime else, by winning the division as well as the American League pennant. They also finished with a franchise-record 106 combined regular-season and postseason wins. Not bad for a team that was predicted by almost every major media network to finish last in their division.
However, the offense struggled considerably against Milwaukee.
Throughout the five-game series, Tampa Bay scored just 12 runs while batting .182 (30-for-165) with eight extra-base hits and 40 strikeouts.
Those offensive struggles ultimately prevented the Rays from competing consistently against Milwaukee's impressive pitching staff.
And while Tampa Bay will have plenty of positives to reflect on following another successful season, the disappointment of falling short of a championship will certainly remain.
Especially considering how many opportunities the organization has had throughout the last two decades.
The Rays have consistently demonstrated they can compete with baseball's best teams.
Unfortunately, they're still searching for the one accomplishment that has continued to escape them.
Their first World Series championship.
