Derek Jeter Sends Strong Message to Rays After World Series Loss to Brewers

MLB Hall of Famer Derek Jeter praised the Tampa Bay Rays following their 2026 World Series loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Jeter highlighted Chandler Simpson, Drew Rasmussen and Nick Martinez while emphasizing Tampa Bay's unexpected American League pennant and bright future.

The Tampa Bay Rays hopes of winning their first World Series championship came to an end Wednesday night following a 4-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 5 at Tropicana Field.

And while Tampa Bay certainly had opportunities to extend the series, former New York Yankees star and MLB Hall of Famer Derek Jeter believes the organization has plenty to be proud of after an impressive 2026 season.

Especially considering how little was expected from the Rays entering the year.

"Everyone doubts him. This year they weren't supposed to go to the playoffs. Last year they were playing in a spring training facility because of the hurricane blew the roof off this place," Jeter said.

Tampa Bay entered the season looking to rebound after spending the previous year playing away from Tropicana Field because of hurricane damage.

However, the Rays exceeded expectations, eventually winning the American League pennant and advancing to their third World Series appearance in franchise history.

"No one expected him to do anything. They were the best team in the American League by far," Jeter said.

And while Tampa Bay couldn't finish the season with a championship, Jeter was particularly impressed with several players who contributed throughout the postseason.

"I'm glad the national stage got a chance to see some of these guys. Chandler Simpson, what a World Series he had, right?" Jeter said.

"Rasmussen did a great job. Nick Martinez coming in, willing to pitch at any point, changing the culture of that clubhouse."

Simpson was one of Tampa Bay's most consistent offensive contributors throughout the World Series, while Drew Rasmussen and Martinez played important roles in the team's pitching staff.

However, Jeter also emphasized that losing to Milwaukee shouldn't take away from what the Rays accomplished. "They deserve a lot of credit. I know everyone goes out to win, but they were beaten by a better team," Jeter said.

"You know, it's not like you can go home and hang your head and say, 'We blew the World Series.' Milwaukee's just done everything in their power, everything necessary, to win games, and they continued it through the World Series."

And while the disappointment of another World Series loss will certainly remain, Tampa Bay now enters an offseason with considerably higher expectations. Especially after winning 106 combined regular-season and postseason games, the most in franchise history.

"The Rays do have a lot to be proud of. Now, next season, they're going to have higher expectations," Jeter said.

"But this season right here, they have a lot to be proud of."
