Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero has been named a 2026 American League MVP finalist alongside Yordan Alvarez and Bobby Witt Jr. After hitting 42 home runs with 101 RBIs, Caminero is guaranteed the highest MVP voting finish in Rays franchise history, surpassing Evan Longoria and Yandy Día
The Tampa Bay Rays Third baseman Junior Caminero has officially been named one of three finalists for the American League Most Valuable Player Award, joining Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez and Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.
And while Caminero faces some impressive competition, his nomination has already secured him a place in franchise history.
The 23-year-old is guaranteed to finish among the top three in American League MVP voting, becoming the highest-finishing player in Rays history.
Previously, Evan Longoria and Yandy Díaz shared the organization's highest finish, with both placing sixth in MVP voting.
And considering some of the talented players who have represented Tampa Bay throughout its history, Caminero's accomplishment is particularly impressive.
However, his recognition certainly isn't surprising considering what he accomplished throughout the 2026 season.
Caminero appeared in all 162 games, finishing the regular season batting .276 with 42 home runs, 101 RBIs, and 100 runs scored.
He also recorded a .360 on-base percentage and .884 OPS while earning his second consecutive All-Star selection.
Those numbers helped Tampa Bay finish with a 98-64 record, capturing the American League East title and securing the league's top postseason seed.
And while Caminero's power has consistently been one of his biggest strengths, perhaps his most impressive improvement came with his approach at the plate.
After recording a .311 on-base percentage during the 2025 season, Caminero improved that number to .360 in 2026.
He also demonstrated better plate discipline while continuing to provide Tampa Bay with significant power in the middle of its lineup.
That's particularly encouraging considering Caminero actually hit fewer home runs than the 45 he recorded in 2025.
However, his overall offensive production improved, demonstrating that he's becoming a more complete hitter.
And while his offensive contributions were certainly impressive, Caminero also showed improvement defensively at third base.
Those developments helped establish him as one of the American League's most valuable players.
Of course, winning the award won't be easy, and probably won't happen.
Alvarez finished the regular season batting .316 with 42 home runs, 106 RBIs, and a 1.033 OPS, providing Houston with one of baseball's most productive offensive players.
Meanwhile, Witt contributed offensively, defensively and on the basepaths, finishing the season with 45 stolen bases.
However, Caminero has an interesting argument considering his individual production and Tampa Bay's success throughout the regular season.
The Rays finished with the best record in the American League, and Caminero played an important role in helping the organization reach the postseason.
And while the MVP award is based on regular-season performance, his contributions eventually helped Tampa Bay reach its third World Series in franchise history.
The winner will officially be announced November 12.
However, regardless of whether Caminero takes home the award, his recognition represents another important accomplishment for the organization.
Especially considering he's only 23 years old.
And while the Rays have several important decisions to make this offseason, Caminero has already demonstrated why he's expected to remain one of the organization's most important players moving forward.
His first MVP finalist recognition is another indication of just how much he's developed and why Tampa Bay needs to ensure he stays in a Rays uniform for his entire career.
