The Tampa Bay Rays may need to part with top prospects to land Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman before the MLB Trade Deadline. With the Yankees and Red Sox also interested, Eric Neander faces a crucial decision in Tampa Bay's push for a World Series.

If the Tampa Bay Rays want to acquire the best catcher available at the MLB trade deadline, it might cost them one of the top prospects in the game today. As the MLB trade deadline draws near, Eric Neander in the Rays' front office has plenty of decisions to make on how they can improve their roster to ensure it's finally ready for a deep postseason run and ultimately hopefully win their first World Series title. The Rays currently sit at 63-44 heading into Thursday's action and sit 2.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees for the American League East division title. However, on August 3rd, there will be no new additions to add to a playoff run.

So with that being said, the Rays must be aggressive if they want to hold off the Bronx Bombers and the rest of the American League. Doing so will likely mean they part ways with the top player in their farm system.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that if the Rays wish to acquire Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, arguably the best catcher on the market, before the trade deadline approaches, they will have to move on from multiple top prospects inside the Tampa Bay organization.

According to Rosenthal, the Rockies face no urgency to move Goodman, who is under club control for three additional seasons. That said, they are asking for multi-player packages led by the team's number one prospects.

It's safe to say the Rockies are well aware of the leverage they hold with only four days to go until the trade deadline.

However, Eric Neander, in the Tampa Bay Rays' front office, might actually have to bite on that big deal if they wish to acquire Goodman's services. Two other clubs inside the division, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, are also teams expressing interest in Goodman before August 3rd arrives.

Goodman would be a huge addition to the Rays' batting order when it comes to power at the plate. He's currently tied for third in Major League Baseball with 31 home runs. It's not just the Colorado Rockies effect. 18 of his home runs have come away from Coors Field and on the road this season.

Although Nick Fortes and Hunter Feduccia have been fantastic with the pitching staff this season, leading Tampa Bay to one of the best rotations in baseball, the need for power at the plate has never been more prominent.

Regardless, the decision will have to be made soon. The 2026 MLB trade deadline is set for Monday, August 3rd at 6 p.m. Eastern.
