The Rays missed out on Luis Arraez after the Phillies landed the former batting champion. With Tarik Skubal also off the board, Tampa Bay faces growing pressure to make another impact move before the MLB Trade Deadline expires.
The Tampa Bay Rays dropped the ball on Monday.
After acquiring a starting pitcher to bolster their rotation on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Rays missed out on trading for the most realistic addition to their offense. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired second baseman Luis Arraez in a trade with the San Francisco Giants.
This trade would have been a perfect fit for Tampa Bay and could be one that Erik Neander and the Rays front office regret heading into the postseason.
What appeared to be a battle between three AL East teams heading into the weekend for the services of Arraez, the Philadelphia Phillies came out of nowhere to make the deal final.
Before the trade, the former batting champ was currently only on a one-year deal with the struggling Giants. He has one of the best batting averages in MLB and should be a great table setter for the Phillies as they look to have a deep playoff run themselves in 2026.
As for the Rays, it's time to be flexible because they still need help in the middle infield. The only move the team has made so far is the addition of Freddy Peralta, the pitcher for the New York Mets, who is a very low-risk, high-reward type of player. Peralta has struggled this season and will need the Rays' organization to help him bounce back.
Tampa Bay needs a sure-fire win before the deadline strikes, however. Options may include Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels to attack the middle infield, or go after one of the best power bats available on the market in Colorado Rockies' Hunter Goodman.
The Rays just have not had enough consistent offense throughout their entire batting order this season. Only Yandy Diaz, Jonathan Aranda, and Junior Caminero have given Kevin Cash and the rest of the organization good production throughout the entire year thus far.
After missing out on both pitcher Tarik Skubal, who finds himself landing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and now Arraez, who will head to Philadelphia, Tampa Bay must get aggressive in the final hours.
The MLB trade deadline is today, Monday, August 3rd at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
