Yandy Díaz is still searching for his first hit of the 2026 World Series as the Tampa Bay Rays trail the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0. Facing left-hander Robert Gasser in Game 3, Díaz and Junior Caminero must spark Tampa Bay's struggling offense to avoid a devastating 3-0 series deficit.
The Tampa Bay Rays are facing a difficult situation heading into Game 3 of the World Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. That game feels like a must win situation. And while several players have struggled throughout the first two games, one of Tampa Bay's most dependable hitters has yet to make an impact.
Yandy Díaz.
The Rays designated hitter enters Monday's contest still searching for his first hit of the World Series. And with Tampa Bay trailing Milwaukee 2-0, the team needs Díaz to deliver at the top of the order if it hopes to turn the series around.
Especially considering the opportunity he will have against Brewers starter Robert Gasser.
Díaz has been one of Tampa Bay's most consistent offensive contributors throughout the season and playoffs. However, that production hasn't carried over into the World Series.
Perhaps his most frustrating moment came during the ninth inning of Game 2 with Tampa Bay trailing 5-4, Díaz stepped to the plate with an opportunity to deliver a game-changing hit. Unfortunately, he couldn't capitalize, and the Rays suffered their second consecutive one-run loss.
And while Díaz certainly isn't the only player struggling offensively, I think Tampa Bay needs considerably more from one of its most experienced hitters.
Fortunately, Monday's pitching matchup could provide an opportunity.
Milwaukee will send left-hander Robert Gasser to the mound for Game 3.
The young pitcher has been impressive throughout October, allowing just one earned run across nine postseason innings.
However, there is one area where Tampa Bay could potentially find some success.
Left-handed hitters have managed just a .552 OPS against Gasser, while right-handed hitters have produced a considerably better .765 OPS.
That difference could create an opportunity for Díaz and several of Tampa Bay's other right-handed hitters.
Junior Caminero will also have an opportunity to make an impact, while Ryan Vilade could provide another offensive option for Kevin Cash when constructing Monday's lineup.
And considering how difficult Milwaukee's bullpen has been throughout the first two games, the Rays need to take advantage of their opportunities against Gasser.
Tampa Bay scored four runs in the first inning of Game 2 but failed to score again. The team also struggled with runners in scoring position during Friday's 3-2 loss.
Those missed opportunities have become a major concern.
And while Gasser has performed well throughout the postseason, I think Tampa Bay has an opportunity to put pressure on the young left-hander.
Especially if Díaz can finally get going offensively.
The Rays cannot afford to fall behind 3-0 in the World Series. And if Tampa Bay hopes to get back into the series, its best hitters need to start producing. That starts with Díaz on Monday night.
