Theo Gillen survived the MLB Trade Deadline and could be on the fast track to Tampa Bay. After dominating Double-A pitching, the Rays' top prospect could earn a promotion to Triple-A Durham and potentially put himself in the conversation for a surprising postseason role.
The Tampa Bay Rays had a great MLB trade deadline.
The team picked up multiple players across four different trades, and almost all of them will immediately impact the Rays' roster for a hopefully stronger second half of the season and turn into a deep postseason run.
But the best part of how Erik Neander and the Rays front office handled the deadline may not actually be the players they acquired. But what it actually took to bolster the team's roster. Across the four trades this past week, the organization hardly had to move any of the Rays top prospects inside the system.
Meaning that the big league team got better, and the potential for the future still remains bright.
With the top of the prospect list staying pat inside the Rays organization, how quickly will those players find themselves making their debut inside the major leagues?
Rays top prospect Theo Gillen was definitely rumored to be potentially moved last week during the trade deadline, with potential trades for either pitcher Tarik Skubal, Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, or even Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto. The asking price was for Tampa Bay's best in the farm system. Now that he remains with the Rays, could he make another jump inside the minor leagues before 2026 comes to an end?
I think that's entirely realistic.
Gillen already made the jump from High-A Bowling Green to Double-A Montgomery earlier this season. So far with the Biscuits, he has already shown that he can handle the pitching and continue his power at the next level. It would not surprise me if the Rays' development team felt he was ready for Triple-A Durham the last month of the season.
So far in Montgomery, Gillen has played in 30 games and is hitting .299/.410/.556 for a .966 OPS. He has 7 homers and 14 extra-base hits since his call-up. Striking out has also improved since his move from Bowling Green to Montgomery, showing really good signs for what's to come.
When the Major League roster gets September call-ups, Gillen could also find a call-up to the Bulls. Not only would this allow him to see Triple-A pitching, but it would give him more confidence in the offseason, plenty of time to create adjustments. It would make him a key piece to compete for a position on the Major League roster once spring training comes around next year.
If the Rays decided to promote him earlier than the final month of the year, then potentially he might find himself benefiting and contributing to the major league roster for the postseason. This isn't a far-fetched idea. Last year, the Cleveland Guardians promoted outfielder Chase DeLauter for his Major League debut during the postseason.
With the outfield depth of the Rays being tested, even with the acquisitions of Jack Suwinski, if Gillen has a hot start once he's promoted to Durham and shows that he can stay consistent with the bat and show power, then maybe we might see him help the Rays fight for their first World Series title.
