The Tampa Bay Rays will start Nick Martinez against Milwaukee Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski in Game 1 of the 2026 World Series. Kevin Cash's decision rewards Martinez's strong road performance while keeping Drew Rasmussen and ALCS MVP Freddy Peralta available for later games.
The Tampa Bay Rays are preparing for their first World Series appearance since 2020, and Kevin Cash has made an important decision regarding his starting rotation.
Nick Martinez will get the start against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 on Friday.
And while Drew Rasmussen and Freddy Peralta have been outstanding throughout the postseason, I think Martinez has earned this opportunity.
Especially when you consider what he's accomplished throughout the 2026 season.
Martinez finished the regular season with a 3.10 ERA across 180 innings, becoming one of Tampa Bay's most dependable starting pitchers.
He was particularly impressive away from Tropicana Field, recording a 2.38 ERA in 16 road starts.
And considering the World Series begins at American Family Field in Milwaukee, that could be an important advantage for the Rays.
Martinez also has experience against the Brewers this season.
During Tampa Bay's March 30 victory in Milwaukee, he allowed just two runs across six innings, helping the Rays secure a 3-2 victory.
However, what makes Cash's decision interesting is how well the rest of Tampa Bay's starting rotation has performed throughout October.
The right-hander has allowed just three earned runs across 21 postseason innings, giving him a 1.29 ERA. And his seven-inning performance against Cleveland in Game 5 was a major reason Tampa Bay reached the World Series.
The veteran was named ALCS MVP after making three appearances against Cleveland, including two starts and a relief appearance.
But I think that's what makes this decision such a positive development for Tampa Bay.
Cash doesn't necessarily have to choose between pitchers who are struggling to find consistency.
Instead, he has several dependable options who have already proven they can perform in important postseason games.
And starting Martinez also gives Rasmussen additional rest before his expected Game 2 appearance.
That could become significant considering how much Tampa Bay has relied on Rasmussen throughout October.
It also allows Cash to potentially use Peralta in Game 3 when the series returns to Tropicana Field. Regardless, Martinez deserves recognition for the season he's put together and the confidence Cash continues showing in him.
And with Tampa Bay needing four more victories to win its first World Series championship, having three dependable starters is a significant advantage.
Especially when all three have already delivered important performances throughout the postseason.
Martinez will face Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski to kick off the Fall Classic as both teams search for their first-ever World Series title in franchise history. First pitch is scheduled for 8 pm EST.
