The Tampa Bay Rays officially signed No. 2 overall pick Grady Emerson to a record-setting $9.75 million bonus. MLB Pipeline already views Emerson as one of the top talents from the 2026 MLB Draft, and he is expected to become Tampa Bay's No. 1 prospect.

The Tampa Bay Rays have locked up their future top prospect.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the Rays and 2nd overall pick Grady Emerson have come to terms on a contract for him to join the organization. The first-round selection for Tampa Bay in last week’s MLB Draft signed for a historic amount as he prepares to head to the American League East.

It was reported that Emerson signed for $9.75 million to join the deep farm system. Although the total is below the slot value of the number 2 pick from this year’s Draft, it is still considered the highest bonus ever for a high school player. It is also the 2nd highest player among any ever drafted into MLB.

Immediately after the Draft,  MLB Pipeline stated this is one of their favorite picks in the entire MLB Draft over the All-Star Break.

“Tampa Bay got the No. 1 prospect on the MLB Pipeline Top 250 rankings with the second overall pick. No need to agonize over this one. Emerson had arguably the best future hit tool in the Draft with his history of strong swing decisions and all-fields power, and he could be a plus fielder at a premium position. He should immediately be in the conversation with Theo Gillen – already a Top 10 overall prospect himself – for the top talent in the Rays system.”

During his senior season, Emerson hit .532 while posting a ridiculous .648 on-base percentage and 1.013 slugging percentage. He added seven home runs, 50 RBI and 31 stolen bases while leading Fort Worth Christian to its first state championship appearance since 2019.

Emerson has stated he wants to find a fast track to the major leagues, and he is shooting for a 2-year window to make his MLB Debut. For now, he will begin his development inside the minor leagues, likely starting in the Florida Complex League before making the jump to the Charleston RiverDogs, the Single-A club for the Rays.

When the next round of updates arrives, Emerson is expected to take over the spot as the top prospect inside the Rays farm system and to enter the Top-100 prospects in all of baseball.
