The Tampa Bay Rays added new arms to the roster by acquiring Yoendrys Gomez and Steven Wilson via trade. Who are the right-handers and what do they bring?

The Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday made a flurry of moves that included roster additions and departures.  

Among movement that featured the organization designating outfielder Christopher Morel for assignment, the Rays added to their stable of arms by trading for right-handers Yoendrys Gomez and Steven Wilson from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for infielder Tyler Murray and outfielder Everson Pereira. 

Who is Yoendrys Gomez and What Does He Bring? 

A product of Venezuela, Gomez began his professional career in the United States after signing a Minor League contract with the New York Yankees in 2016. The 26-year-old has spent most of his time inside the organization’s Minor League system. 

On Sept. 28, 2023, Gomez made his MLB debut in a relief role but otherwise spent most of the season with Double-A Somerset. According to his MLB.com profile, Gomez made five relief appearances with the Yankees over three stints (5/24-26, 6/21-26 and 7/21-30). He posted a 3.97 ERA and did not allow a run in four of his five appearances. 

In 2025, Gomez split the season between the Yankees (six appearances), Dodgers (three appearances) and White Sox (12 appearances/nine starts), going a combined 3-3 with a 5.17 ERA (62.2IP, 36ER), 58 strikeouts, 27 walks, a 1.39 WHIP and a .247 (60-for-243) opponent average over 21 appearances (nine starts). 

According to Baseball Savant, Gomez boasts a seven-pitch arsenal but relies heavily on four pitch types: Four seam fastball (his dominant pitch at 33.5 percent usage), sinker (19.3 percent usage), sweeper (17.2 percent usage) and curveball (14.1 percent usage). He produces good extension (87th percentile) and above average hard-hit percentage (73rd percentile). 

Who is Steven Wilson and What Does He Bring? 

Coming out of Santa Clara, Wilson was selected by the San Diego Padres with the 231st pick in the eighth round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft. He spent multiple seasons in the club’s Minor League system before making his MLB debut on April 9, 2022.  

The 31-year-old appeared in 102 games for the Padres including one start across the 2022 and 2023 seasons before he became one of three pitchers (four players overall) dealt to the White Sox in exchange for right-hander Dylan Cease. In 2025, Wilson went 2-2 with a 3.42 ERA (55.1IP, 21ER), two saves, 51 strikeouts and 22 walks over a career-high 59 appearances for the White Sox. 

Through four Major League seasons, Wilson has made 201 appearances, posting an 8-12 record with a 3.86 ERA in 196 innings of work. 

Wilson boasts a four-pitch arsenal: A sweeper (his dominant pitch selection with a 58.3 percent usage rate), a four seamer (33.4 percent usage rate), a changeup (7.1 percent usage rate and a cutter (1 percent usage rate). His fastball run value and breaking run value are both well above average, and he has maintained above average to good extension throughout his career.
