The Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to finish the penultimate homestand of the regular season with a series win. Rookie left-hander Payton Tolle got the start for the Red Sox in the win, continuing his incredible rookie season by opening up the game with three strikeouts on nine pitches, the 125th immaculate inning in baseball history and the eighth Boston pitcher to accomplish the feat.

In honor of Tolle's incredible first inning, we take a look back at all the Red Sox pitchers to throw an immaculate inning: 

Before Tolle, former Boston ace Chris Sale was the last Red Sox pitcher to throw an immaculate inning, which he did three times during his six-year tenure in Boston, joining Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax and Max Scherzer as the only three pitchers to do so three times. 

Sale's most recent immaculate inning came in the Red Sox' 12-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Aug. 26, 2021. Sale's immaculate inning came in the top of the third as he punched out Nick Gordon, Andrelton Simmons and Rob Refsnyder. The then-32-year-old left-hander punched out eight in 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits en route to the Boston win. 

Sale threw two immaculate innings during the 2019 season, the first of which was accomplished in Boston's 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on May 8. With the game tied at one in the bottom of the seventh inning, the southpaw struck out Hanser Alberto, Dwight Smith Jr. and Stevie Wilkerson on nine pitches. Sale tossed eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out 14.  

Sale's second immaculate inning of the season came as part of a complete-game shutout of the Kansas City Royals en route to an 8-0 Red Sox win on June 12. Sale's immaculate inning came in the bottom of the eighth inning as he punched out Kelvin Guttierez, Nicky Lopez and Martin Maldonado for three of his 12 strikeouts on the day. 

Porcello tossed an immaculate inning on Aug. 9, 2019, against the Tampa Bay Rays, striking out Trevor Plouffe, Wilson Ramos and Mallex Smith in the bottom of the fifth inning as  part of a six-inning effort. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on four hits across six innings, striking out seven en route to an 8-2 Red Sox win and the only Cy Young Award of his career. 

Porcello wasn't the only Red Sox pitcher to be immaculate in 2017, as he was matched by Boston's All-Star closer, Kimbrel, in the Red Sox' 4-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on May 11. After taking over with one out in the eighth inning and the game tied at one, Kimbrel struck out the first two batters he faced. However, it wasn't until his second inning of work that the then-29-year-old reached immaculate status, making quick work of Hernán Pérez, Travis Shaw, and Domingo Santana to cap off a scoreless ninth inning and secure his second win of the season. 

Prior to the pair of immaculate innings in 2017, you'd have to go back to 2012 to find the last immaculate inning thrown by a Boston pitcher, when Buchholz achieved the feat against the Baltimore Orioles in an Aug. 16 Red Sox win at Camden Yards. Buchholz struck out the heart of the Orioles lineup, getting Adam Jones, Chris Davis and Matt Weiters in the bottom of the sixth inning. Buchholz allowed three earned runs on eight hits, striking out eight across eight innings in a winning effort. 

The first immaculate inning in Boston history came from none other than Hall of Fame starter Pedro Martinez in a May 18, 2002 win over the Seattle Mariners. Martinez, like Tolle, achieved the feat in the first inning, beginning by catching fellow Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki, who only struck out 62 times in the entire season, looking for the first out of the inning. Martinez capped off his immaculate first by punching out Mark McLemore and Ruben Sierra. The Hall of Famer went on to allow only one earned run on six hits while striking out nine over eight innings en route to his sixth win of the season. 

After playing 14 games in a 13-day stretch that ended on Thursday, the Red Sox will have their second day off in five days, on Monday, before opening up a three-game set with the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on Tuesday night. Patrick Sandoval (1-5, 4.58 ERA) will get the start for Boston in the series opener, while Texas has yet to name its starter. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. ET.
