The Boston Red Sox made great strides in 2025, advancing to the playoffs for the first time since 2021. However, they lost to the New York Yankees in the wild card round of the American League playoffs, falling in three games.
That said, the Red Sox have many things to be excited about, including the development of young cornerstones like Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer, as well as the continued excellence of ace pitchers Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman.
So, what's missing for Boston moving forward? Power, according to team legend and Baseball Hall of Famer, David Ortiz.
He made the following comments at his charity golf tournament in Florida on Friday. Tyler Milliken of the Section 10 podcast relayed them on "X."
“The history of this organization has been that you have to have good, consistent power… The results look weak when you don’t. You need to have two guys who can give you 30 [home runs] and 100 [runs batted in], especially in our division.”
Finding 30-homer, 100-RBI players is not easy, but there are a few different ways to make it happen for Boston this offseason.
First, the hope is that Anthony can grow into that type of player sooner rather than later. He finished third in the American League Rookie of the Year voting in just 71 games, and he hit .292 with a .396 on-base percentage. The power is real, and if he stays healthy, he might be able to be one of those guys for the Sox in 2026.
Furthermore, the Red Sox have been linked to power bats on the free agent market. Pete Alonso, the longtime first baseman of the New York Mets, has never hit less than 34 home runs in a full season of action. He appears to be a fit for Boston, who seems to be losing faith in Triston Casas.
Furthermore, former Sox designated hitter Kyle Schwarber is on the free agent market, as is Eugenio Suarez, who hit 49 home runs at third base between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners in 2025.
The Sox could also bring back Alex Bregman, who hit 18 home runs this season in just over 110 games. If he's healthy for a full season, he might be the guy that Ortiz is talking about.
A lot, but the Red Sox have already said they know they need to spend - and spend big - this offseason. Furthermore, after clearing all of Rafael Devers's salary in June, there is some money to play with.
