The Red Sox' outfielder just keeps suffering setbacks from his hand/wrist injury. Are we finally getting some clarity.
Update, 9:25 a.m. ET: Sam Kennedy went on WEEI and said that Anthony has a sprain in his ring finger.
It's fair to want to wait for a second source on information like this, but WEEI is also the flagship radio station of the Boston Red Sox, so I don't believe they are in the business of making up things about the team.
According to the Greg Hill Show, WEEI's morning radio show, Red Sox star Roman Anthony has a ligament tear in his ring finger. Anthony hasn't played since May 4 and has been on the injured list with a right hand and wrist sprain, but he's already had multiple setbacks, the latest of which kept him down from baseball activity through Thursday.
Presuming this report is true, it's another setback for the 22-year-old, who was the top prospect in baseball at the time of his promotion in 2025.
A former second-round pick from the Florida high school ranks, Anthony is hitting .229 this season (109 at-bats) with one home run and five RBIs. His slow start at the plate mirrors the slow start from many Red Sox players, but his talent is certainly there.
In 71 games after his promotion last season, Anthony hit .292 with eight homers, 32 RBIs and 18 doubles. He carried a 143 OPS+ and is supposed to be a building block for the organization.
However, the injury issues are a concern. Anthony missed the last month of last season, and the team's playoff series, with an oblique strain. Now there's this.
If Anthony is forced to miss additional time, the Red Sox will try to piece the outfield together with Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Masataka Yoshida and Ceddanne Rafaela. Duran has gotten exceptionally hot over the last few days and played a huge role in the team's sweep over the Kansas City Royals from Monday-Wednesday.

The Red Sox enter play on Friday at 22-27 overall and they'll play host to the Minnesota Twins (23-27) at Fenway Park. First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. ET.

As noted by the Red Sox, they've made a roster move on Friday morning, promoting right-hander Tayron Guerrero from Triple-A. Zack Kelly has been sent to Worcester and Kutter Crawford has been moved to the 60-day injured list in nothing more than a procedural move.
