Boston Red Sox top prospect Franklin Arias departed Saturday night's Portland Sea Dogs game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
It was a wild Saturday night for Boston Red Sox fans on social media after a pair of coincidental events caught their attention. First, Boston's top position player prospect, Franklin Arias, was lifted from Double-A Portland's game in Hartford. Then, closer Aroldis Chapman was caught by NESN cameras hugging members of the Red Sox bullpen. As we now know, neither player was traded, but that didn't stop the social media speculation. Boston Red Sox Senior Director of Player Development Brian Abraham addressed the mysterious departure of Arias in an appearance on WEEI on Sunday morning.
What happened?
The 20-year-old Arias began the night playing shortstop and leading off for Portland, where he went 0-for-2, walking once and striking out twice. After striking out in his third plate appearance to lead off the top half of the fifth inning, he was replaced at shortstop by Boston's No. 43 prospect Marvin Alcantara.
While social media ran rampant with trade speculation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com quickly reported that there was "no injury or transaction", while his MassLive counterpart, Christopher Smith, called the removal a "manager's decision."
What they're saying
Abraham echoed Smith's reporting when he joined Rob Bradford on the Baseball Isn't Boring Show, "There are certain things that happened throughout the week and during the games that we make sure we hold our players accountable for certain situations on the field," he told Bradford while emphasizing that Arias is healthy. "There's a lot that happens between the lines and the dugout...just part of the game and part of the development and the growth for a lot of our players, part of it happened last night," he continued.
Arias is one of the fastest-rising prospects, not only in the Red Sox organization but in all of baseball. The 20-year-old shortstop hit .375/.432/.764, with eight home runs, matching his home run total from the entire 2025 season. He was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for April.
While he has cooled off slightly after the torrid stretch in April, Arias has still performed well in May, hitting .294/.429/.382 through nine games.
Whatever it was that Sea Dogs' acting manager Kyle Sasla saw from Arias that caused him to remove him from Saturday night's game was not too severe, as he was back in the Portland lineup on Sunday afternoon, leading off and playing short in the Sea Dogs series finale with the Yard Goats.
What about Chapman?
Chapman was caught by NESN cameras hugging members of the Red Sox bullpen in the bottom of the sixth inning of Saturday's 3-2 win over the Braves, in which Chapman recorded the save.
The 38-year-old was asked about the scene in the dugout after the game. “That’s normal,” he told Cotillo through an interpreter. “Every time I get to the bullpen, I give them hugs,” he continued.
While both scenes created quite the buzz on social media, the trade speculation will have to wait, for now.
