Update, 3:10 p.m. ET: Two additional players to be named later will be going to Chicago and one more will coming to Boston, per Mac Cerullo.
Original: The Boston Red Sox swung an interesting trade on Sunday afternoon, sending pitching prospect David Sandlin and right-hander Jordan Hicks to the Chicago White Sox for pitcher Gage Ziehl.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Red Sox are also sending $8 million to the White Sox as part of the deal, making this an effective salary dump on their end. The White Sox will owe Hicks $16 million over the remaining two years on his contract.
Hicks had been acquired from the San Francisco Giants last year in the trade that sent Rafael Devers to the Bay Area. He struggled mightily and will get a fresh start in Chicago.
Still just 29 years old, Hicks is a seven-year veteran of the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, Giants and Red Sox. A reliever when he came up, Hicks had 14 saves for the 2019 Cardinals and has appeared in 238 career games out of the bullpen.
The Giants converted him to a starter when he signed there in 2024, and he went 5-12 over two-plus years in San Francisco, pitching to a 4.83 ERA in 42 appearances (29 starts).
He struggled mightily after the trade to the Red Sox, going 1-2 with an 8.20 ERA in 21 games.
While the White Sox finished last in the American League Central a season ago, they've made some moves this offseason that suggest they are coming out of their slumber. Perhaps Hicks can rediscover himself there and help the White Sox surprise. It's unclear what his role will be in Chicago.

An 11th-round pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2022, he played his college ball at Oklahoma. He helped the Sooners to a second-place finish at the College World Series and went 9-6 across Double-A and Triple-A in 2025. He had a 4.50 ERA in 106.0 innings.
The No. 14 prospect in the Chicago organization at the end of 2025, he was drafted by the Yankees in 2024 out of Miami. He was acquired in a trade deadline deal for veteran outfielder Austin Slater. He pitched at a combination of Single-A, High-A and Double-A across both organizations, going 7-6 with a 4.12 ERA. He struck out 90 matters in 107.0 innings. He's projected to make his major league debut in 2027.
