The Boston Red Sox surged into the All-Star break winning 14 of their final 16 games to end the unofficial first half. Now, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow has added to the team’s overall depth, acquiring utilityman Jahmai Jones from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for a player to be named later. 

The 28-year-old utility man appeared in 57 games for Detroit in 2026, hitting just .137/.219/.221/.440 and posting a -1.2 bWAR before being designated for assignment on Thursday. 

However, Jones is just one year removed from an incredibly effective 2025 season in which he hit .287/.387/.550/.937 with seven home runs. He was particularly effective against lefties, hitting .288/.393/.577/.970, with all seven of his home runs coming against southpaws. 

Jones has appeared in parts of six seasons with the Angels, Orioles, Mets, Yankees, and Tigers, hitting .214/.297/.363/.660 with 30 extra-base hits in 198 games. 

Despite the rough surface stats, Jones hits the ball hard, posting an average exit velocity of 90.9 mph and a hard-hit rate of 43.4 percent. A batting average on balls in play (BABIP) of .190, paired with strong exit-velocity numbers, suggests he may be due for some positive regression. 

Boston let Rob Refsynder go in the offseason, as he signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Mariners, so Jones will get a chance to take his place as the lefty masher.

Defensively, Jones has played both left and right field for Detroit, while slotting into the lineup primarily as a designated hitter. He has, however, spent time at both second and third base in the majors. 

Despite having positional versatility, Jones doesn’t thrive at any one position on the diamond, posting disappointing defensive metrics across the board. 

The 28-year-old has spent the bulk of his time in the field at second base, where, in 205, he has posted a defensive runs saved of 0, with a fielding run value and outs above average of -4. In 144 innings in the corner outfield spots, Jones has a defensive runs saved of -4, an outs above average of -2, and a fielding run value of -3. 

Jones will likely take the open spot on the Boston 40-man roster vacated by Danny Coulombe, who was designated for assignment following Saturday’s win in New York. He's out of options, so he'll land on the 26-man roster.

The Red Sox will look to make it 10 in a row when they return from the All-Star break, kicking off a four-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays with a doubleheader at Fenway Park on Friday afternoon.
