The Boston Red Sox sent shockwaves across baseball on April 25 when they fired Alex Cora, the third-winningest manager in franchise history, and six members of his major-league coaching staff, including third-base coach Kyle Hudson and bench coach Ramon Vasquez.

After the firings, the Red Sox scrambled to fill the positions beneath then-interim, now full-time manager Chad Tracy, tabbing then-first-base coach Jose David Flores as bench coach. The team settled on internal replacements for all open positions, promoting Double-A manager Chad Epperson to interim third-base coach and minor-league defensive coordinator Pablo Cabrera to interim first-base coach.

According to MassLive.com's Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo, neither Cabrera nor Epperson will return to their roles on the major-league staff in 2027.

Epperson, the winningest manager in Portland Sea Dogs history, drew plenty of ire from fans as third-base coach after he had several runners thrown out at the plate on what seemed like aggressive sends. He will return to the Red Sox organization for his 26th season in 2027, taking over as the manager of the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox. According to MLB.com's Ian Browne, Iggy Suarez, who served as interim manager for Worcester after Tracy's promotion, will become Epperson's bench coach.

The 29-year-old Cabrera will return to his role as the minor league defensive coordinator.

According to McAdam and Cotillo, it's still unclear who will replace Epperson and Cabrera on the major league coaching staff. However, it is worth noting that the duo said on the 'Fenway Rundown' Podcast that they had heard that Breslow was told by ownership that he could not hire any "big-name coaches" because of the money still being paid to the previous coaching staff.

An update on the Red Sox former coaching staff

In the hours after his firing in Boston, Cora turned down an offer from former Red Sox and current Philadelphia Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski to become the Phillies' next manager. After Philadelphia was eliminated in three games by the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card round, Dombrowski again reached out to his former manager in Boston to offer him the position, and he was turned down again. Cora, who is owed $7.25 million from the Red Sox for what would have been the final year of a three-year extension signed in 2024, will take the 2027 season off to spend more time with his family.

Of the seven coaches fired, only hitting coach Pete Fatse and assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson have joined new organizations.

Fatse, who spent parts of six seasons on Boston's major-league coaching staff, joined the World Series-bound Tampa Bay Rays' research and development team as a hitting consultant over the summer. Lawson, who joined the Miami Marlins as a roving hitting instructor over the summer, was named Miami's major-league hitting coach on Oct. 12.

Among the coaches fired was franchise icon Jason Varitek, who served as the game-planning coordinator. Shortly after the firings, the team called Varitek's dismissal a "reassignment" to a different role in the organization, to be announced later. Earlier in the season, Kennedy was asked about Varitek's role on the team, saying the two-time World Series Champion and Red Sox Hall of Famer was taking time away from baseball after being hit hard by the decision.

Kennedy was asked about Varitek's status within the organization in the annual end-of-season press conference on Oct. 5, telling reporters that the longtime catcher has not yet rejoined the organization in any capacity, but the two sides have "connected" with each other.

The Red Sox will now begin their search for their third base coaches in two years.
