The Boston Red Sox’ active trade deadline led to an incredibly depleted farm system; however, according to Andrew Parker of SoxProspects.com, the team will promote one of its few top prospects that remained with the organization beyond the deadline: No. 2 prospect and outfielder Justin Gonzales is heading to Double-A Portland. 

In 89 games for High-A Greenville, the 6-foot-5, 210-pound outfielder hit .271/.391/.463/.854 with a career-high 17 home runs and 58 RBI while stealing 11 bases. Despite the massive power potential, Gonzales does well to limit strikeouts, punching out at only an 18.7 percent rate in High-A this season while walking 13.3 percent of the time. 

The 19-year-old corner outfielder signed with the Red Sox organization out of the Dominican Republic for $250,000 as part of the 2024 international free agent class. After spending the 2024 season in the Dominican Summer League, he made his United States debut in 2025, appearing across three levels. In 93 games from the Florida Complex League to High-A, Gonzales hit .281/.363/.390/.753 with only four home runs. 

One of the biggest knocks on Gonzales heading into the 2026 season was that, despite his massive power potential thanks to his size, he hit the ball on the ground far too often, posting a 57.4 percent ground ball rate in 2025, which made it tough for him to tap into that potential. However, the 19-year-old has done well to lift the ball more often, cutting the ground ball rate down to 46.6 percent. While the 10.8 percent decrease still places Gonzales in the 33rd percentile among all High-A hitters, the change has allowed him to tap into the power much more effectively, launching 17 home runs in 2026, eight more than his total for each of his first two professional seasons. 

While there are still plenty of development opportunities for the 19-year-old, if it all clicks, he could become one of the best power-hitting prospects in baseball. 

Former top prospect Kristian Campbell continues to impress in Triple-A Worcester. After hitting .379/.507/.552/1.059 in 19 games in July en route to being named the International League Player of the Month, Campbell has continued his hot streak into August, where he has hit .286/.392/.500/.892 in 12 games. 

With injured outfielder Roman Anthony set to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Tuesday, adding to an already crowded outfield mix at the major league level, Campbell’s path back to Boston remains unclear. However, his return to form is a welcome sign for the organization that gave him an eight-year, $60 million contract extension in 2025. 

After a disappointing 2-5 road trip in Toronto and Pittsburgh, the Red Sox will return home for a six-game homestand beginning on Monday night when the Arizona Diamondbacks come to Fenway Park. Alec Gamboa (0-0, 1.59 ERA) will get the start for Boston, serving as the opener for a bullpen game where Brayan Bello is expected to play a major role. Rookie left-hander Mitch Bratt (1-1, 3.74 ERA) will get the start for Arizona. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
