Trailing 6-1 in the top of the eighth inning, Boston made it interesting on Friday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but they ultimately fell 10-5. Despite the loss, Carlos Narvaez continued to produce in his rookie season.
The Boston Red Sox lost 10-5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Chase Field, falling to 78-64 on the campaign. With the loss, they remain 0.5 games back of the New York Yankees for the top wild card spot in the American League, but they are also now 4.5 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East.
Despite the defeat, it was a good day for Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez, who went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. He joined Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk in some special team history, according to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald.
Red Sox catchers with 24+ doubles as a rookie:
- Carlos Narváez
- Carlton Fisk
(And according to Stathead, Mike Greenwell qualifies because he made 1 career appearance at catcher for one inning)
Narvaez, 26, was acquired by the Red Sox last offseason in a trade with the Yankees, and he's become the team's regular catcher. He's now hitting .250 with 12 home runs, 42 RBIs and a .320 on-base percentage.
And anytime you can join Fisk in history, you've accomplished something special. One of the best catchers to ever play the game, he spent 24 years in the big leagues with the Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. Eleven of those years were in Boston, and he was an 11-time All-Star, a three-time Silver Slugger, a Rookie of the Year and a Gold Glover.
He hit 376 career home runs and drove in 1,330 runs.
The Red Sox and D'backs will be back in action on Saturday night at 8:10 p.m. ET. Lucas Giolito pitches against Brandon Pfaadt.
