The Boston Red Sox' 2025 second-round pick was off to a solid start to his professional career, but now he's set to miss an extended period thanks to a hand injury.
BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox got some tough news on Monday night: according to Peter Abraham and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, 2025 second-round pick, infielder Henry Godbout, is set to miss time after undergoing surgery for a broken left hand.
After three seasons at the University of Virginia, Boston selected Godbout with the 75th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, which was acquired as compensation for starter Nick Pivetta signing with the San Diego Padres after the 2024 season. Godbout signed for $1,093,800, the full slot value associated with the pick.
Godbout made his professional debut at the end of the 2025 season in High-A, making a strong first impression and hitting .341/.473/.477/.950 with six doubles in 13 games for Greenville. The 22-year-old returned to Greenville to start the 2026 season, picking up right where he left off, hitting .277/.410/.492/.902 with seven home runs in 34 games.
He was placed on the seven-day injured list after being hit in the hand with a pitch on May 30.
According to SoxProspects.com, Godbout is a "right-handed hitter with a contact-over-hit profile. Elite contact skills. Fits the mold of college bats the Red Sox have targeted and elevated in recent drafts. Bat speed has improved and has the frame of someone who should hit for more power than he showed at Virginia. If he can hit the ball harder, more consistently, without sacrificing much contact, could develop into an intriguing middle infield prospect." He is currently ranked as the sixth-best prospect in the farm system. "

After a rough start to his professional career, 2025 first-round pick Kyson Witherspoon has put together the best three starts of his season, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out 16 and walking six over his last 14.2 innings pitched.
Former top prospect Kristian Campbell has been out of Triple-A Worcester's lineup since leaving the WooSox' June 4 game with tightness in his side. After a strong start to the season, Campbell has struggled as of late, hitting .164/.319/.260/.579 since May 1.
After being optioned to Triple-A after Thursday's disastrous start against the Baltimore Orioles, starter Brayan Bello met with the media in Worcester on Sunday afternoon, striking a much more positive tone than he did back in Boston. "I feel much better today. Feeling like I'm ready to do what I need to do down here so I can go back to the show. And you can imagine, just want to be back up there," Bello told reporters, including Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram. Bello is scheduled to start on Thursday for Worcester.
Left-handed pitcher Jake Bennett was scratched from Sunday's start in Triple-A in preparation to rejoin the big league squad in Tampa, taking Bello's spot in the rotation. The 25-year-old made his major league debut in May, making two starts for Boston in place of the injured Sonny Gray. Bennett allowed five runs on 11 hits in 10.1 innings, going 1-1 during his first taste of major league action. Since being optioned on May 8, Bennett has dominated in four starts with Worcester, posting a 2.45 ERA across 18.1 innings pitched, striking out 12.3 batters per nine innings.
Meanwhile, back in Boston, the Red Sox fell to 27-37 on the season after a 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. They'll look to even up the three-game set at the Trop on Tuesday night. Payton Tolle (3-2, 2.28 ERA) will get the start for Boston opposite Nick Martinez (5-2, 2.29 ERA) for Tampa Bay. First pitch set for 6:40 p.m. ET.
