The Boston Red Sox will promote one of their selections from the Minor League phase of the 2024 Rule-5 Draft ahead of Tuesday night's game in Minnesota

Ahead of Tuesday night's game in Minnesota against the Twins, the Boston Red Sox have added a fresh arm to their bullpen mix. According to 7News' Ari Alexander, Boston has promoted right-handed pitcher Jack Anderson to their major league roster.

The move comes on the heels of the disastrous start from Garrett Crochet, who lasted just 1.2 innings on Monday in the worst start of his career, forcing Jovani Moran, Tyler Samaniego, and Ryan Watson to cover 6.1 innings. The Red Sox will likely look to Anderson in a long relief role with their lower-leverage arms taxed.

The promotion requires two roster moves: one that adds him to the 40-man roster and another that opens a spot on Boston's active roster. Pitcher Johan Oviedo has been moved to the 60-day injured list after being shut down for six weeks following a consultation with Dr. Keith Meister that revealed a flexor strain in his right throwing elbow. He will not be eligible to return from the IL until May 30. The Red Sox have also optioned Saminego to Triple-A to make room on the major league roster.

Anderson, now in his second year in the Red Sox organization, was selected by Boston in the minor league phase of the 2024 Rule-5 draft from the Detroit Tigers. He has been used as both a starter and a reliever across 28 appearances in the Red Sox system.

Anderson played for Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic, making one start against Mexico, allowing one run on two hits, striking out three across three innings. He has made two starts with Triple-A Worcester, pitching 9.2 innings with a 3.72 ERA.

According to SoxProspects.com, Anderson features a five-pitch mix of a four-seam fastball, cutter, splitter, curveball, and slider, saying in their scouting report, “Throws strikes but gives up a lot of hard contact. Solid splits against lefties. Able to work as a spot starter or multi-inning reliever. Selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the minor league phase of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft. Organizational high minors depth.”

- Starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval is slated to make his second rehab appearance on Tuesday night in Nashville when the WooSox take on the Nashville Sound. Sandoval made his first appearance on April 8th, throwing 63 pitches over 3.1 innings. If Sandoval continues to work on his pitch count, Boston may opt to bring him up to the big leagues, though the team has yet to define what his potential role may be.

As for Anderson, he will have the first chance to make his major league debut on Tuesday night in Minnesota when the Red Sox take on the Twins. Sonny Gray will get the start for the Sox. First pitch from Target Field set for 7:40 p.m. ET.
