Brendan Rodgers played for the Houston Astros in 2025.

The Boston Red Sox signed free agent infielder Brendan Rodgers to a minor league deal on Thursday night and he'll get an invite to spring training when the team reports next week.

An infielder, Rodgers is a former Gold Glover. He should compete for reps at second base, and maybe third.

Here's what you need to know:

About Rodgers

The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 Draft of the Colorado Rockies, Rodgers is a .261 career hitter. A seven-year veteran of the Rockies and Houston Astros, he won the Gold Glove in 2022. He has 47 career home runs, including three seasons of double-digit blasts. His career-high is 15 in 2021, and his career-high in RBIs in 63.

He spent the 2025 campaign with the Astros, hitting just .191 in 43 games. He had two homers and 11 RBIs.

How does he fit with the Red Sox?

It seems like his best chance to make the roster is as a platoon partner. He's a career .295 hitter against left-handed pitching, so he could make for a logical pairing with Marcelo Mayer at third base or David Hamilton at second. It should be noted that Rodgers has never played third base in the big leagues though.

How about the roster?

Things are complicated, as we outlined on Thursday. Let's take a look at where the position player roster stands right now, hypothetically.

C: Carlos Narvaez

1B: Willson Contreras

2B: ?

SS: Trevor Story

3B: Marcelo Mayer

LF: Jarren Duran

CF: Ceddanne Rafaela

RF: Wilyer Abreu

DH: Roman Anthony

Bench 1: Masataka Yoshida

Bench 2: Connor Wong

Bench 3: Isiah Kiner-Falefa

Bench 4: ?

So, the real question here is how do the Red Sox want to handle second base? Do they want to give David Hamilton the left-side of the platoon and have him take up one of those additional roster spots? If so, it seems like Rodgers is in a battle with Romy Gonzalez for the spot.

But what happens to Nate Eaton, who impressed in 2025? How about Nick Sogard? How about Kristian Campbell?

These are all things that manager Alex Cora will have to weigh in spring training, and with so many players gone for the World Baseball Classic, there will be plenty of opportunities for guys to show what they can do.

One last thing

Rodgers was teammates in Colorado with Story, which is something to understand. The two played together in 2020 and 2021, not to mention time spent in spring training over the years.
