The Boston Red Sox have had what can be described as a disastrous year through the first 50 games of the season.

Entering Saturday, the Red Sox are 22-28 and in fourth place in the American League East, sandwiched in between the also-struggling, third-place Toronto Blue Jays (24-27) and basement-dwelling Baltimore Orioles (22-29).

Boston's poor start through the first 50 games of this season has already led to the dismissal of manager Alex Cora as well as several other members of the coaching staff.

Even still, the Red Sox aren't out of it yet.

The American League is struggling as a whole this season. When Saturday begun, the Tampa Bay Rays (34-15), New York Yankees (30-22) and Cleveland Guardians (31-22) were the only teams more than two games above .500.

Boston is two games behind the Seattle Mariners for the final AL wild card spot, with four teams currently ranked ahead of them in the wild card standings (with the exception of teams who currently have a playoff spot).

As a result of the cluttered nation of the AL, the Red Sox are looking to add bats to their lineup in the trade market. And what's on their wishlist could lead to a reunion with a familiar face.

Boston is looking to add right-handed bats to the lineup with shortstop Trevor Story likely out until after the All-Star Break and outfielder Roman Anthony missing nearly a month of action, per a report from Jen McCaffrey of the Athletic.

According to McCaffrey's report, the team is looking for general offensive help and not looking for specific positions.

The Red Sox are unlikely to land a top-tier bat from an AL team due to the amount of clubs still in the thick of the playoff race. However, Boston could potentially find a boost from someone it knows well.

Outfielder Rob Refsnyder played with the Red Sox from 2022-25. During his tenure in Boston, Refsnyder carved out a role for himself as a platoon player and one of the best hitters against left-handed pitching in the major leagues.

Refsnyder had a 159 wRC+ (weighted runs created-plus) in 70 games with the Red Sox in 2025.

The 35-year-old left Boston this offseason and signed a one-year, $6.25 million deal with Seattle and has struggled to show the same form he did with Boston, even against lefties.

Refsnyder has slashed .101/.167/.188 with a .355 OPS in 33 games this season. He's hit two home runs with five RBIs and has a wRC+ of four against southpaws this season.

Refsnyder's contract has earned him a longer leash with the Mariners, but if his struggles continue, the M's will likely attempt to move on from him. Seattle has former top 100 prospect and fellow right-handed-hitting outfielder Brennen Davis with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers.

Davis has an opt-out clause in his contract after Aug. 1, which he could activate if he's not on the 26-man roster.

The Mariners could be open to dealing Refsnyder with Davis in Triple-A and to avoid the latter triggering the opt-out clause. The Red Sox could hope a reunion leads Refsnyder to regaining his typical form and providing a spark not just in the lineup against lefties, but in the clubhouse, as well.
