The Boston Red Sox have a much-needed off day on Thursday after playing 14 games in 13 days. However, down on the farm, Triple-A Worcester made a notable transaction, placing former Red Sox top prospect Kristian Campbell on the seven-day injured list with a left foot contusion. The move to place the 24-year-old on the injured list comes just two days after he was removed from Worcester’s game against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. 

After struggling to start the season, as the player development staff helped to rework his swing, Campbell had appeared to have turned a corner in recent months, more closely resembling the player that made him a consensus top-10 prospect in the sport just 18 months ago. Since July 1, the second baseman-turned-outfielder has hit .320/.440/.524/.963 with six home runs, 12 doubles and 29 RBI in 45 games. Campbell’s hot stretch was recognized as he was named the International League Player of the Month for July. Overall, Campbell is hitting .256/.383/.380/.763 in 109 games with Worcester. 

Despite his recent stretch of strong play, Campbell didn’t appear to be in consideration to be recalled either on Sept. 1, when rosters expanded to 28, or when the team placed All-Star center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela on the injured list ahead of Sunday’s series finale in Baltimore. According to The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey, interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters that the team went with Nate Eaton over Campbell because the team couldn’t offer him regular playing time on the big-league roster, and they did not want to “disrupt regular at-bats and rhythm.” 

However, with Eli White undergoing imaging on his foot after getting it caught in the grates along the centerfield wall in Tuesday's loss to Los Angeles, it appeared as though there would be a path for Campbell to get regular at-bats in Boston should White require a trip to the injured list himself. Now, Campbell will have to wait a little bit longer for his second big league opportunity. 

Regardless of whether or not Campbell’s next opportunity in the majors comes in 2026, he remains a major part of the organization's future. After signing an eight-year, $60-million extension with the team at the beginning of the 2025 season, Campbell is under team control through at least the 2032 season with club options for both 2033 and 2034. Even throughout his early-season struggles, the organization has remained steadfast in its belief that Campbell can contribute at the major league level. For the first time since April 2025, he’s beginning to show that the team is right to have that belief in him. 

Like it or not, the Red Sox made the right decision in not recalling Campbell to take Rafaela’s place on the roster if they could not offer him consistent playing time. Given his contract, it is certainly in the best interest of the club to make sure the next time Campbell joins the Red Sox, it’s for good. 

The Red Sox will be back in action on Friday night as they open a three-game set with the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park. Sonny Gray (17-4, 2.69 ERA) will get the start for Boston in the series opener opposite Seth Lugo (6-8, 5.04 ERA) for Kansas City. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
