A week after losing former assistant general manager Taylor Smith to the president of baseball operations job with the Athletics, the brain drain continued for the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

According to Kyle Williams of the Baltimore Banner, Director of Baseball Sciences David Besky is joining the Washington Nationals as a pitching strategist with the major league team. According to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo, it will be a uniformed position.

After three years with Driveline, former Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom hired Besky as a player development coordinator in January 2023. He was then named an assistant director of player development later that year when Craig Breslow replaced Bloom as CBO in October. Besky was promoted to head of baseball sciences in December 2024.

Besky’s departure is the first offseason poaching from former Red Sox assistant general manager Paul Toboni, who took over as President of Baseball Operations in Washington last offseason. There will likely be more departures coming as Smith begins to form his staff with the Athletics.

What does it mean?

As we discussed when Smith was hired, brain drain is natural and a sign of a strong organizational reputation across the league. However, it also puts the Red Sox in a tough spot, forcing them to replace at least two key front-office pieces with less than a week to go until the offseason officially begins.

Things get even more complicated when you factor in the speculated hiring freeze within the Red Sox front office, driven by both the money owed to former manager Alex Cora and six members of his major league staff after firing them in April, and an influx of hires in baseball analytics and science departments under Breslow. Even with a lockout looming, which makes these personnel less essential during its duration, ownership may have no choice but to let the front office replace some pieces so it can operate in the month leading up to the stoppage if more people leave for Sacramento or Washington.
